i hate the wierd color hapenings with voodoo3 in AH but i love the high frame rates in max res and smooth gameplay.

is this a tradeoff thing or is the tnt card as good or better in both areas?

I think an Ultra-TNT2 would be slightly faster than a Voodoo3, the image quality is also a bit better because it does not have the texture-size limitation that the Voodoo's have. The TNT2 also supports 32-bit color if you are into that kind of thing.

I have a Voodoo3 and a GeForce DDR -- both of which I've used with AH. Of course the GeForce is faster (It's a gen after the v3) but the picture quality (even in 16-bit color) is much better than the V3. (also much more expensive) If you aren't interested in spending a lot of $$$ for the GeForce I think a TNT2 is a good choice at a great price.

I'm using a V770 Ultra. The planes and everything look quite a bit better on it versus my old video card. (Intel i740 8mb card.) My framerate also doubled from 35 fps to 60+ at times. The difference is the 32 bit color, voodoo can't go above 16 bit. From most of the benchmarks I've seen, the ultra tnt2 chipset is faster than the voodoo 3 chipset as well. The only thing that I noticed about the v770 is it's lack of TV out. In fact all it has is a VGA adapter, so if you need a TV out, you may want to look elsewhere. I've also heard that drivers for voodoo cards are better for AMD products as well, so if you have a k6-2 or 3 you may want to stick with your voodoo. Otherwise, if you look at the framerate thread around, the V770 and GeForce are the fastest cards available for AH.

I play in 1600x1200 with the voodoo3 and get 24 to 50 fps depending on clouds, action etc.

hitting the target is harder at this resolution since the tracers are smaller but i feel its more realistic so I use it anyways even though it makes my shooting stink

the ge force is better at this resolution?

The GeForce is definitely better than the Voodoo3, especially since it can run at 32 bit color.

Even the TnT2 is better than a Voodoo3

Can someone explain to me what a TV out is there for? Why would anyone in his right mind want to out put high resolution signal through a crap quality TV screen anyway? I'm just sitting here looking into my 19" monitor and wondering...

TV out is nice for a few things: A. Dvd movies if you don't have a stand-alone DVD player. B. You can run it into your VCR and record things. (The ultimate guncamera footage.) C. If you do home movie editing on the computer, you need a TV out to record to a VCR.

can someone with a GeForce tell me what framerates they get in 32bit color at 1600x1200 resolution and 16 bit color frame rates with this card?

preferably someone with a 550 p3?

the range from in clouds to no action etc

Hi Citabria

I had a V3 3000 and got the same frame rates you report 20s-50. I have since installed a CLAP (GeForce256 DDR) running the 3.68 drivers. I get frame rates on the ground in the 30s in the air 40s-50s in all conditions, with fps hitting the mid 80s looking in the 45deg up and full up views. Running on a P3-650e. So results may vary =)
These are all in 32bit, havent tried 16 since the Voodoo.

I'll be the first to say that the GeForce is obviously better than a TNT2, but the funny thing is that the TNT2 Ultra is getting better fps in AH than the GeForces in some cases. (Drivers better for DX?)
On my computer: (V770 Ultra (4.02 Diamond drivers), AQ2500 DX sound accelerator Sound card, cel 466, 96mb ram) I'm getting 50 -60 fps consistently at any resolution I've tried. (My monitor's max is 1600 - 1200) I was also using 32 bit color. Since I only have a 15inch monitor, I generally stay at 800 x 600, otherwise everything gets pretty small. At that resolution, the video card has little trouble maxing out my monitors 75 Hz refresh rate.
(Btw: GeForce 2 comes out in 1 month.)

I'm using a v770 at 800x600x16, and getting
30/50fps. But if I try 1024x768x16 or 640x480x32, the frame rate falls to 10/20fps.
Well, in a PII 350, 128mb ram.
Any clue?

I found that little tidbit on Tom's Hardware Guide. Nvidia has enhanced the GeForce processor and will be calling the new chip a "GeForce 2". I'll see if I can find out more.
