Jet Engine Exhaust Flames

Plane and simple, can we get some exhaust flames on the jet birds? Currently there is just a black hole on the ME-262, ME-163 and AR-234 engine exhausts. Maybe since the 163 relied on rocket propulsion it could trail a bit of smoke.

     Jets usually only flame on startup and shut down, you really down want the flames burning past your turbine
section in regular flight.  Maybe that's one reason for those tiny TBOs for the jumo engines come to think of it  :D

      Usually what you see is a little shimmer caused by the hot air.  I spent about 25 years working around jets on
a flightline ramp and it was amazing how easy to was to get caught off guard by exhaust if you weren't paying
attention.

As Rino said, combustion will be contained within the combustion chamber. The only time you'll see flames from the engine is during a compressor stall generating a rich burnout (rich burnouts were quite common during the starting phases, too).

It would be cool if they trailed a little distortion in the air from the exhaust heat though.  That would be a pretty neat effect in game I think.

That would probably cause a significant performance decrease...but still, it would be cool :)

Thats debatable. Depends on how you model the texture. In IL2, the ripples are visible, yet appear to have little to no impact on performance.

What would be nice is flames licking the cowling of my Mustang on startup, and Blue flames funneling outta my 190 when the supercharger kicks in :D

Actually, you don't meet hundreds of people in AH neither. How often do you see "hundreds" of planes within your 6.0k visible range? Probably around 50~60 planes max provided there's a hefty furball formed... and even in those cases the most friendlies/enemies you'd have within 3.0k where details start to show, would be not more than 20~30. Besides, the detail depiction range can always be altered as an option. Some may be able to see it only when up really close, others might want to crank the detail level up and see such details from further distances.

The thing is, by today's standards, depicting stuff like glows, waters, distortion and etc etc.. ain't exactly state-of-the-art gfx tech. It's quite amazing how fast the industry advances... just a few years ago, seeing water that looks like water was quite amazing in Silent Hunter3... nowadays, even MMORPG games have kewl looking reflective water...

Only when the afterburner is engaged, and then only (really) at night.  You can see a burner in daylight but you have to look for it (unless you're looking at the tail end, which is good if you're flying and bad if you're on the ground).

The back end of a jet engine looks suspiciously like a black hole most of the time.

All of which is moot; the Jumo wasn't augmented.

By the way, smoke is also bad; the J59 had far too much of it, as did the TF-30.  The good news with the -30 is if it was smoking it was probably working.  In the immortal words of Joe if it says Prat & Whitney on the engines it better say Martin Baker on the seats...
