Caution - Abit Slotket Users
« on: August 18, 2000, 03:19:00 PM »
My Intel Flip Chip 700e mhz chip fried on me. I had it since June '00, and it was not overclocked. It was on an Abit BE6-2 motherboard using an Abit Slotket adapter.

Intel told me they would send me another one, but warned me that if it failed again in this configuration I was on my own.

The told me that the failure rate of this chip in the Slotket is very high - life expectancy averages 3 to 8 months due to voltage spikes. They recommended I put the new chip in a motherboard that doesn't need an adaptor.

I don't know if this effects other Pentium  III cpu's...

Hi gunthr,
          Bummer! I wonder if this was at the root of your stability problems all along. I am very glad that I went with Slot1 cofiguration for both my Cel 400a and my PII 550E. Seems like less is definitely more in this case. At least it is being replaced, very honorable of them to do this despite their awareness of the issue. Was it an Iwill Slocket III? I have heard these are the best for stability and voltage control.

Hi Kb,
It was an Abit Slotket. Man, when that CPU went, it went in a puff of smoke. It looked like a Mig weld where the CPU mated with the Slotket.

By the way, <S> to Intel for the upfront, hassle-free way of handling this problem.
I tried to get a slot-one cpu as a replacement, although that was a no-go

I'm sure that the continual voltage spikes effected my stability all along... I never would have figured that one out.

Now, I will have to get a new mobo that will run a flip chip without an adapter. Any suggestions? I want to overclock.

Well, why wasn't this info out earlier?

First time I hear of it, and I got a 566 otw, with a Slotkey.

Now I learn that it'll last 3-6 months.

Blah  .

I've been running a Celeron in a Slotket adapter for over a year now without a problem.  It must just be that particular one...

Luckily you know before opening any packages. I'd call, explain the reason, and get an RMA pronto. Might even be able to change the order so that when they get what was just shipped back, they send out the replacement stuff.

Really a bummer but it beats the heck out of having the system up and running for a week or so where they say it is used and cannot be returned.

StSanta, I've been wondering myself why the "Abit Slotket problem" isn't widely known by now.

Keep in mind that I spoke to only one Intel tech support guy who authorized my RMA Number... who knows if he was giving the official Intel gospel, or if he was giving opinion. I posted exactly what he told me, but I hate to be responsible for you acting on something like this without checking into it yourself.

Remember too, that if you have an Abit motherboard, you are in a catch-22 situation:

1. Abit recommends the Abit Slotket for use in their motherboards. (duh)
2. If you use a 700 mhz P-3 Cpu, (and maybe others) in this Slotket, it appears that you run a risk of catastrophic failure of your CPU.
3. If you decide to use a different adaptor, like the Iwill adapter, and you have a problem with your CPU, Intel may not honor the warranty because you were using an adapter not recommended by the motherboard manufacturer.

At any rate StSanta, you should give Intel a call...

Thanks guys

But wtf is an RMA?

<confused look on face>
<throws hands in air>

Americans than their abbreviations.

What's the abbreviation for abbreviation? Strikes me as odd having such a long word for it

Well, I have to TT ES DN FST ST now, toodlepipski.
