Pentium III 600e(100mhz FSB)CPU - O'Clock????
« on: April 11, 2000, 01:30:00 PM »
I understand this chip is easily overclockable to 800 mhz by raising the front side buss from 100mhz to 133mhz.

I'm also under the impression that my ABIT BX6 rev2 mobo will support only 66/100 mhz FSB, which I think would only allow me to run this chip at the stock 600mhz on that board.

What is the best overclocker-friendly mobo
out there to help me get 800mhz out of that P-3 600e CPU?

Would my Diamond TNT 2 Ultra Video Card hack the 133mhz FSB?

Thanks for any info or speculation...

I don't know about the MB, but I'll bet the new VIA board can do 133 Mhz.  Also, your video card will work fine if 133 Mhz FSB is a setting supported by the motherboard.  The problems with overclocking the AGP slot come from people who are using the BX chipset and overclocking it beyond it's normal max of 100 Mhz.  (Remember, AGP slots run at 66 MHz regardless of bus speed.  By overclocking a board that doesn't support 133 Mhz you are also overclocking the AGP slot to a higher frequency.)

There you go, it will work!  I didn't know the exact specs for that particular MB, I was just answering the AGP question only.(Like I said, if the motherboard supports 133, your AGP slot will NOT be overclocked.  It will run like it should at 66 MHz.)

Thx for the info lynx.  That is a nice MB. (Look at all those FSB possibilites, wow, overclocker's dream.)

Hi guys,
Sorry to say Bloom but you're wrong about the AGP clk. The Bx6r2 has 2 settings for AGP CLK,1/1 for FSB below 100mhz and 2/3 for FSB above 100mhz. If you overclock the FSB you DEFINITELY push the AGP clk as well.
I have a PIII 550E (slot1) on a BX6r2 O/Cd to 644 and my FSB is 117mhz. This results in the AGP being pushed to 78mhz at the 2/3 setting. I also have a V770 Ultra and the most you can run it at is about 90mhz AGP without frying the card. This is actually plenty as anFSB of 133mhz results in an AGP of 89mhz. I havent gotten there yet as I have CAS3 PC100 ram that wont go beyond 117 stabley. I did have it at 83mhz FSB/AGP for 11 months with my old Celeron 400 O/Cd to 500 with no trouble. BTW, all this is absolutely confirmed by SiSoft Sandra, an excellent utility that tells you every single thing about your system hardware, drivers, performance etc. in overwhelming detail. I highly recommend it to anyone who plans to overclock or even just understand your box

Gunthe, It is very important that you get CAS2 PC133 RAM if you want to get up  to those very high FSB speeds. I would also suggest you read some of the overclocking guides available on the web before you buy or build anything. A little knowledge goes a loooong way towards an easy, safe and stable overclocked system. www.sharkyextreme.com  has one of the better ones I've seen.

OK, done preaching

My BX6 r2 manual says (pg. 1-1):

"Supports 66 and 100MHz CPU external clock speeds."

Also, at the bottom of pg. 1-2 it states:

"Note: *Above 66MHz/100MHz bus speed supported but not guaranteed due to the PCI and chipset specs."

This led me to believe that my board wouldn't support 133MHz buss. I see now that it doesn't say that at all.

Thanks for the time taken in these responses to help me out. This is definately a learning process, and I appreciate the advice.

Just a little note to say that PC133 memory isn't always needed for a 133FSB (hi kb  ).

System specs:
PIII600e at 800MHz (133 FSB)
Abit BE6-ii
1xPC100 CAS3 DIMM (128MB)
1xPC133 CAS2 DIMM (128MB)
CL Annihilator Pro (stable at 89MHz AGP bus, but AGP aperture down to 32MB from the normal 64 - this may be due to the PC100 memory)

Bombjack, What is the effect of having the AGP aperture being reduced like that? Did you change it with the Abit software, or did it just show up like that when you raised the FSB? I'm going to go with pc133 memory, but I never understood what the AGP aperture was.

Hi Gunthr,

I changed the AGP Aperture in BIOS when I encountered problems with it at 64MB (specifically, a lockup when starting 3d applications).

AGP Aperture refers to the amount of physical memory from which the AGP bus can retrieve data - see this URL for an excellent explanation: http://epsilon.silicon.net.my/adrian/Speed_Demonz/BIOS_Guide/BIOS_Guide_2c.htm

Thanks a lot Bombjack, the entire Bios Guide is excellent - the most comprehensive I've seen, and a big help to me
