Radeon Bug Help
« on: August 11, 2001, 05:10:00 PM »
Finished my new System yesterday   :)
ABIT KT7-RAID 1.2GHz T-bird Atholon
Got Radeon VE 32MB DDR(found out the is one of the worst radeons out there lol)  at 4xAGP all AGP funtions i could find enabled.
But I still get minor bugs (i.e. when i look around plane graphics tear and cube for a moment then return to normal[this ends quickly])It's perfectly playable, but still bothers me to look at it ... any idea how to get rid of this? I've tried anti-alising/and some mapping fixes but haven't found one yet

Congratulations, you've discovered the joy that is ATI's TERRIBLE drivers.  Ask someone with a Radeon what driver version they use.  (ATI's driver known issues releases are generally about as long as the Encyclopedia Britainica.)

Don't worry too much, ATI's drivers have actually improved lately if you can believe that.    The ones for the Radeons have actually been far better than their previous drivers.  In the past I had 2 different ATI cards (Xpert 128 & Xpert 98 ) I never was able to find a bug free driver for them in AH, Windows, or Sim City.  No matter what one of them was messed up.

Congratulations, youve just proved you know how to talk out of your ass.  All of the current radeon drivers for this year are rock solid, and provide great preformance, especially at high respolutions and color depth.  Having used a radeon for the past 6 months, I can tell you the drivers work better than my old Voodoo 5500s drivers did.

Maybe some helpful info like "try downloading a current driver" would be more helpful than pre-pubecent comments made in the vain hopes of reassuring yourself that your card is best?

ATI has had poor drivers with very slow upgrades in my long experience.  Poor ATI just wasn't ready to dive into the competitive market of 3D gaming cards at first, but they seem to be upping their game this year considerably.

Lately their Win 9x drivers have been pretty good, but their Win2k drivers have had major problems.  I do hear that the newer 2k drivers may be useable though.

No matter what video card you have, and no matter what OS you have.  If you are having problems, try the latest official drivers and Direct X 8.  If you get something that works well... DON'T CHANGE IT!  :)

Congratulations 2Late4U, I'll allow you to appologize now before I explain to you just how much experience I have in this area.

If you notice I did mention to ask someone who is currently using a Radeon what driver version to use.  I personally have used MANY MANY MANY ATI cards in systems I've built in the past.  If used for business applications and Windows 2d performance they are top notch with excellent color accuracy.  When it comes to 3d game performace they are buggy, and trust me I can dig up tons of evidence to prove my point.

I am not in any way "trying to reassure myself that my card is best."

As for "talking out of my ass", I'll ask you to do a search on just how many times people have thanked me for helping them on this forum and via e-mail.  If this is the kind of thanks I should expect for volunteering hours of my time per week trying to help people enjoy their AH experience please let me know; I'll stop posting here right NOW!

Perhaps Anand is "talking out of his ass."
 http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1422

I also suppose none of these issues ever caused a problem: http://support.ati.com/products/pc/radeon/radeon_issues_games.html

Please also ignore these ATI acknowleded issues with the Radeon alone:
 http://support.ati.com/products/pc/radeon/radeon_issues_multimedia.html

All of these unsolved issues and problems on this http://www.radeonfaq.com/  page are probably just "pre-pubecent" ramblings eh?   ;)

You don't suppose I've ran into this while fixing a computer before do you? http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q297/5/32.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=ATI&rnk=16&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WIN2000

I've had a BAD day today and reading that 2Late4U post really put me into a rage and/or fury.      ;) (Pardon the pun.)

Bloom25, I for one look forward to each of your posts.  You have educated this poor excuse for a puter operator.  Keep posting and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain :)

Hope tommorow is a better day :)

Ah heck bloom....all video card drivers have problems regardless who makes them.

Uhmmm,...I took some time to try to duplicate quite a few of the problems listed in those articles, and the only ones I could duplicate were related to the anti-alias stuff, which I already knew existed.

You really cannot compare the previous Rage and earlier drivers to the Radeon.  I, like you, have suffered through all the plagues of problems with ATI's earlier cards/drivers, but the Radeon is not like anything ATI has ever released.

I could find tons of problems with every other ATI product I ever had, but I am having troubles finding problems with the Radeon and its drivers.
Sure, the first drivers were pretty lousy, but that is pretty much true of NVidia's first release for new product drivers as well.
I expect the first drivers for the Radeon 2 to be buggy too.

At least for Windows 95/98, the drivers got fixed pretty fast and without a dozen releases.  I think ATI has officially released 4 drivers for the Radeon since it started shipping.

You have been tainted by ATI, and so have I, but I went ahead and tried the Radeon,..and despite having a Hercules GF2 Ultra 64MB card here, I ended up keeping the Radeon.

My two bits.

In all honesty the quality of ATI's drivers were not what made me post up all those links.  I just don't like being personally attacked on a BBS where I donate hours of my time trying to help people get AH to run correctly.

I'd agree with you that ATIs Radeon drivers have actually improved recently; I even said so above in my second post from the top.
