AH Stickmapping Routine

The instructions in AH Stick Mapping are far too brief. I don't understand the technique.
 Can anyone give me a "click-by-click" example of mapping any button, say the GEAR up/down. If I can learn to do one button correctly, then I should be able to do all 34 button & hat positions on the CH Pro-Throttle  and Combatstick manually.
