Sat Nite AvA - Good Crowd
« on: June 12, 2010, 11:04:13 PM »
Had a great time in AvA this evening - tops it was around 25 folks.

My first sortie I think I had 5 kills then went swimming...a portent of things to come.  I think I hit the drink with a perfectly good plane about 5 times, and only got a handful of kills the rest of the evening! :o

We had our first real squad night in there, and had 7 or 8 of my AH FA Refugee buds in there with me, and they really liked it...(except the LOOONNG distances, and the nighttime)  I almost lost half the squad when it got dark, but thankfully it didn't last long.  (but long enough for everything to totally black out and for me to hit the water again).

Lots of fun, good fights and deaths.

Just a couple minor suggestions:

1.  The GE plane set 'seemed' pretty outmatched...but maybe that's just my poor flying.  I'd be interested to hear what folks more familiar with the planesets have to say.  We tried for three hours to take A114 and get the 190D9 and 109K4, but no dice.  I think they had just killed the town when I had to leave, but we didn't have any troops.

2.  The map was HUGE - IMO, WAY too big for 20 players.  It would be nicer to force the action in a much smaller area.  The Okinawa map last week was about perfect, IMO.

Be patient with us - we are still learning the ropes.  We have no clue on the history of the AvA room, AH in general, or any 'fiefdoms' or personality conflicts.  (If we did, we'd probably be in there stirring the pot with the rest of you addicts!!).

Thanks for the welcome of hot lead and metal!

It was a good night.

Personally I think the 109G-2 G-6 match up pretty well with the P38J The 190 A-5 can do well in skilled hands. I haven't flown the A-8 or against it enough to comment.

I flew a few sorties in the G-6 and was able to down some P38's. Ran into a Hellcat and he had no problem matching the G-6 so I bugged out when the fight went neutral.

I discoed 5 times, the last 4 on consecutive sorties. That sucked.

Nice to see so many guys in the AvA.

It was great seeing you guys in the arena.

That map is typical of what we usually have to use...huge. Unless everyone wants to stick with PTO setups and fight over a tiny island for the duration, we can only do so much with the ETO terrains.

With the existing setup, there is some strategy and teamwork needed. Long range bombing coupled with ground attack fighters and ground vehicles to capture a base. If either side works together, things can be done. The intention is to show that a setup with different aspects can be as fun as furball setups.

Cheese,

I don't know if you guys realize you can form your squad in the AVA just like in the Main Arenas. I saw all you guys with AH before your name but no squad name.
It's up to you guys if you want the squad formed there or not. I was just supplying you in the info in case you were not aware of it. If you do just send out invitations just like you would in the Main.

Hey Cheese, terrains are now in development specifically for the AvA environment.  Shorter flight times & other AvA oriented setups otw.

Great news Ranger!! I think Puma and I (36th) will be making the AVA our home. We were just talking about the maps and we were hoping this would happen. I would like to see smaller maps with far fewer fields.

I was wondering if you could feed a topographic map to the the terrain maker and have it create the basic layout?

Excellent news Ranger!  any ETA on them?

Also - one other suggestion I forgot to mention....LOOSE the super radar, and just stick with BAR/DAR indication.  There is currently no way to sneak in a strike force undetected.

As it is, radar still worked even under 500 ft.

Yep, that's usually how we start em out to get the basic layout.

I wish I could, but that all depends on the terrain makers finishing them, HTC approving them & then the AvA staff creating set ups to use them.  So I guess the answer is "fairly soon".  Trust me, no one wants to see the stuff coming out more than me.

I have my own opinion about 3 or 4 players total in an arena, and someone trying to sneak a base.  Dot dar was there for a reason.   :headscratch: How quickly we forget where we came from, and what an uphill climb it has been.

Does anyone have any objections to full clipboard dot dar above 1000ft and bar dar below that? Fully sneaking bases should only be possible with gv's and with bar dar set to 1000ft and below you could still run NOE if you really want to try and sneak in a base run.

Full dot dar helps arena seeding.

People need to see a target when the arena has few people in it.

I think 500 feet is high enough for NOE to hide under.

Yep my 7 year old son had a blast in there for about 30 minutes before I sent him to bed the other night. I think he landed 3 kills in his Hellcat.

+1 My wing and I followed an aircraft for 3/4s a sector wondering wth it was doing. We were all but waving our arms and yelling "hey!!! Ovvvvver heeeeerrreeee, lets fight  :D !!" Right as we caught up to him we figured out what was on the agenda... to suicide strafe the ack at the field. I guess to set up vulching for a base take.

I can get that kind of stuff all day long in the MA. I hope that doesnt start to be a trend in the AvA

Why are any of you guys looking at these setups as dogfighting furball only things? I know everyone pictures himself to be an uber ace but, there is more to these setups than just furball til you pass out.
