Grounded due to "White Screen of Death"
« on: November 24, 2001, 11:47:00 PM »
Looks like I am screwed....again.

I removed AH then reinstalled it....it gets to the white screen, then locks up and I have to hit "reset" to reboot the system.
Went into the Settings file in AH directory, deleted the "video7.cfg" file......that worked before, did nothing at all this time.

Before I bore you all to death, let me recount the history of my computer dilemma:
About 2 weeks ago, I forgot to unplug my system when a storm blew in, and it started lightning pretty close.  I went to get on the 'Net, and found that my modem was dead.
Okay, went and bought another modem, exact same model, also bought VisionTek Xtasy GeForce 2 MX400 64mb video card....figured, why not, gonna be inside the case anyway, now is as good a time as any........
Had hell getting the stuff to work right.  Was severely disappointed in the performance of the vid card.  Kept getting lockups and stuttering, the old AH slideshow if you know what I mean.
Tried different Detonator drivers, used the Detonator Destroyer to eliminate the old ones I tried before I settle on the 7.78's.  Still not satisfied, I ended up reformatting my HD, figured maybe it was time, and it couldn't hurt........
Well, after getting back up and running, I redownloaded AH, was able to fly for short periods, but the problems still were there............after a short time, maybe 30 minutes, I would have to leave AH or go through a lockup.
Yesterday, without warning, I started getting the white screen again.  Lockup city......checked my IRQ settings tonight, found that my modem was sharing IRQ with my vid card, changed that, still no dice.
For those of you who are into computers and "in the know", is it possible that my mobo got partially zapped when the modem died in that storm?   Sounds stupid, but that is when I started having the troubles, and I am out of ideas now.

1.  Yes, it is possible that something on your mobo died without killing the whole thing.  That's a pretty rare occurence, but it could happen.

2.  Um... more details please.  Need to know your OS, DX version, mainboard, sound, etc. etc. etc.  As much detail as possible please.  Also, what power supply are you running?

3.  You have tried re-downloading AH, re-installing DX 8.1, etc?

4.  It's also possible the zap fried some RAM or messed up some stuff on your hard drive.  Either of those things could cause all kinds of wacky toejam to happen.  Oh, and your power supply could be wacky too I suppose, although they generally just stop.
