Setting password on specifc file/folder

I'm trying to figure out a way to set a password on a specific file or folder in windows 7. I did some research and found that I have to install a program to do it, but I'm sure that has to be another way.
If anyone knows any help would be appreciated.

I havn't used windows 7 much even though I have it. I don't think there is a way windows will password protect each or a pacific file (I could be wrong). There is free software called truecrypt which will password protect your file.

I could have messed up here, truecrypt might just encrypt your file. ( i'm really tired) I think it will make a encryption key and the key is used to encrypt and decrypt your file. Don'tr lose the key if in fact this is the way it works. Sorry for the confusion.

I use a program I have used for years called powerdesk pro, one of the utilities this program has is to password protect a file.

With TrueCrypt, you create a single file on your computer's hard drive that is encrypted. If someone looks at that file all they see is random data - there's no way to know what that file contains. Once you "mount" that file using TrueCrypt, and supply the correct password or pass-phrase to unlock it, the contents of that file appear as another drive on your system. You just have to be very careful not to lose your information and if you have a Windows problem...

There are 2 retail programs available that don't encrypt your files but allow you to password protect your folders...Folder Guard and Magic Folders.

Can you elaborate on that. I'm not sure exactly how to put a password on that either, I assume I need to right click the file for options but I can't find anything that has to do with a password there as well.

winrar is a software program that will compress and zip a folder or folders (or files). It will also let you password protect your zipped file.

I have used winrar in the past and still do at times.I have a file on a keydrive, actually it is passwords. I use powerdesk pro and password protect and the file and the file is zipped with winrar and a password is added to the zip file.
You can also encrypt your files with windows.

I have win-rar and use it quite often but can you tell me how to get to the actual password options?

Open up winrar,(pick a file or make 1 called test)click add file. A menu opens, click tab advanced on top and a new menu opens and on right side is set password button and also when winrar is open up on top the click file a drop down appears, there is a option  set default password. I havn't used the password option in a long time, just to password protect my 1 file.
Seems to me I set password when I made the zip file. Hope this helps.
