If you come to KY and touch an Alligator Snapping Turtle, be prepped to not only have your hand bitten clean off, but also have a Fish and Game warden on your arse.
Landing is overrated.

You don't see very many large snappers anymore.  I see a few medium size common snappers around, normally crossing the road.  What we see the most of in WV are stinking musk turtles. Vile little creatures.  I have to private lakes near me that are overloaded with turtles.  The fishing pier has a resident snapper in the 3-5 pound range.
I remember my first experience with large snappers. I was about 8 or 9 and my dad took my to a friends fishing cabin on a river close to home.  I got out of the car to hissing.  The guy had 3 very large snappers chained to a tree.  He was gonna make soup out of them.  The largest ones shell was roughly 2.5 feet across. The guy said the big on was almost 100 lbs.

Ty Sir....and on a side note....

fished my lil park lake this morning....caught 20 bass. Smallest was 8 inches or so and the largest was 5 pounds plus. The bite started good about 11 in the morning and I had to quit at 1:00 to go get ready for work...otherwise I think I could have kept it up for another hour or so.

My definition of a successful day of ice fishing is any day you don't get wet.  Today was my first unsuccessful day :lol

Tec ,,What happen ?

I don't like beef liver . It don't do as good a chicken . I found some netting a few year's back that work's great with chicken liver . Just cut you a little squad out and then rap the liver in it and run your hook through it and it will stay on for ever . Work's really good in the river's and on a trotline and helps keep the little ones for steeling your bait so easy .
here's a link to the bait netting , you can get it in squares or a roll .

Going out in the morning . the water hit 55 yesterday and the fishing report was good ..

For those using baits that wont hang together very well - try getting some thin elastic, and bind it to the hook with that. (We do that in the UK beach casting with soft baits to stop them exploding off the hook when casting)

While he wasn't catching the biggest snappers I've seen, I'll still give that fella a 9 out of 10 on the bad assery meter.

I had a snapper go after a tire on my car once. They aren't to be trifled with.  :rock
