Deer season has been a bit exciting to say the least.... Went up north for opening day (last Monday, and stayed thru Wednesday) Hunted hard with my 2 kids (14yr old boy/girl twins) Saw lots of doe, and my boy saw a deer with a bunch of Doe's but didn't want to take the shot, as he wasn't sure it had antlers or not. (Buck season is seprate from doe season up here in PA in the area we were hunting, and it was Buck season only) So the mountains were a bust deer wise, but a great time anyway spending time with the kids and our hunting friends.
So, we decided to try my wifes cousins house this weekend (Saturday) as he has about 20acres in Haycock PA. Well....daughter was sick so she stayed home, which was ok, as she got her first deer last year, and my son has yet to get one after hunting hard for the last 3 years. Soooo...... it was me and my son only. We got up in the box stand about half an hr before sun up. So about 15mins after the start of shooting time, we were chatting about what he wanted for Xmas, and him describing to me the difference between Xbox and Xbox One is( still at a loss personally but whatever) So were whispering back and forth, and I glanced over to my left and saw a deer moving in about 40yrds away. I looked at my boy and whispered "deer" Followed by me saying "Jay, Its a Buck".......well the only response I got was "your kidding me" He glanced over and saw it.....Beautiful 6pointer nose to the ground just walking around in front of us. Well he got his gun up........crosshairs on it and said "dad I can take it" I gave him the green light, and BOOM!!! (on a side note its amazing how loud a 12Ga slug gun is in the woods at 7am
) Well, his shot was true and the buck went right down, not a flinch not a flicker....... We sat there for about 5 mins just looking at each other with smiles on our faces.......and giggling like a pair of 10yrold school girls
So, hunt was successful.......my boy FINALLY after hunting hard for 3 years, never giving up, or complaining, staying in the woods from dawn to dark, cold, wet and disappointed on many occasions was able to tag his first deer ever. Im sure he slept the sleep of kings on Saturday night, and replayed everything in his until he passed out.
Needless to say, dad has been strutting around the house the last 2 days proud as hell of that boy, and exchanging father son glances and smiles as we pass each other in the house...no words, but none needed. What a great kid, and his stick with it attitude that finally paid off.
Pics to come when I get a chance.......
