Pollock porked his system
« on: March 10, 2001, 07:04:00 PM »
Ok,  The worst that could of happened did happen. I went to install a new celleron 566
into my puter and i porked both toejam!!!!

My board should still be warrenetd BH6  v1.2 but this gives the perfect exuse to upgrade.

Here is what im keeping and I welcome suggestions on mommyboard and cpu combos (faster the better but budget of 300max)
I would like to keep my vid card and hope to breech 1GHZ if possible 850mhz is acceptable

Keeping.

Maxtor 45gig 7200rpm harddrive
128meg pc133 ram
128 meg pc 100 ram
Guilmot Xentor 32meg tnt 2 ultra (debating?)
CL soundblaster
linksys ethernet card (dsl fiberoptic)
USR sportster 56k modem
Satantek X36USB
Thrustmaster elite pedals (hate em but were cheap)

I am looking for stability and no hicupps in compatabilies.  I had an AMDK6 266 1.5 year ago and ran into issues and bugs but i hear amd has gotten toejam straight.  I welcome advice from the ACES gurus help me spend my money...

Hard to beat the AMD 800's for price right now.

Abit & Asus both make good Mboards for em.
I went with the Abit KT7-a for around 140$
AMD Athlon 800 Mhz with warrenty & good fan will run you about the same again.

Go to http://www.pricewatch.com/
click on motherboard combos under CPU.
click on 1GHZ Thunderbird.
prices start at $240.
Most include MB, cpu, hs&fan.
ECS is a very stable MB but not for overclocking about $260 with 1ghz Tbird.
If you want to overclock pick a slower cpu and a more expensive MB.

I wouldn't lie to a former squaddie.

Only a moron would get suckered into buying a p3 now, but it takes a special breed of moron to get conned into a p4.

AMD is the fastest (and cheapest) right now.  I could give you a pile of benchmarks to show it, but I can assure you that an Athlon 1.2 is faster in ANY DX based game than a P4 system.  (Given identical vid cards etc.)

The only good thing about a P4 system is you know that you are supporting a trio of blue mimes.

Right now the best deal is the Athlon Tbird 800 - 900.  (Go to www.tomshardware.com  and read their new Athlon scaling article.)

As for MBs, you have 2 real choices Abit Kt7 (kt7a) or Asus a7v (a7v133).  Both are excellent boards, though I prefer the Asus.

(The Kt7a and a7v133 have the 133 mhz fsb setting needed for the new "c" type Thunderbirds.)

(BTW:  Your system would be faster in your new system board by dumping the 100 Mhz stick of Ram and running your system at 133 Mhz fsb memory setting.)

Ok, I think all the advice has definitly brought back into the AMD world.  I wonder if anyone has heard of a motherboard company called Transcend?  I will research them today since Aces plays like crap on my lapotop.  If not I will go with the boards recommended by bloom <S>.

Go with Bloom's recommendations.  I have never heard of the board you mention.

The mainboard is the most complex, and possibly the most important part of your system.  It has a crapload of built-in chips and systems, and all of your PC's parts plug into it.  Never scrimp on your mainboard.  And remember, you get what you pay for.  There is a reason the Asus and Abit boards are more expensive than the ones from "Fred's Mainboard Company".  Go with the brand names, the well recognised ones that have been well tested by the hardware community.

Pollock, may I ask how you managed to destroy both the cpu and mobo?

What did you do and what were the symptoms?

I am not sure but when I added my new 566 powered up there was no beep, I added back my working 366 and no beep. I removed all components reset the cmos even still no beep.
I can only assume the cpu took out the board. I do not have another board to further trouble shoot.

Pollock, did you possibly bump the power connector off of the MB?  How about ram and video card properly seated?

I don't really see how you could have killed your MB and CPU that easily.  (You didn't stab both with a screwdriver did you?   )

No Bloom I think the voltage jumpers were wrong on the new cpu. I isolated it down to just the board, psu, and cpu, no beep power supply worked and fans did too

1 Week ago Sunday:
Duron 850 was $90.25 + 6.99 S&H at  http://www.dynastyexpress.com

Asus A7V133 KT133 Socket A No Audio 200/266 FSB ATX  $138 + $10.62 S&H  http://www.essencom.com/

And if you don't have an ATX case, then:
Web Gear Mid Tower ATX 4x5¼” 4x3½” (2 hidden) 300W PS $49.99 + $16.89 S&H from 1steweb.net

$312.74 total...close enough?

This MOBO may be more thant the one you asked about, but it will give you the option to upgrade again by moving from the Duron to say 1.2G Thunderbird.

Also, I dunno if you could get the shipping reduced by buying from a single source, but it may be worth making a phone call to 1st eWeb to find out.  You may be able to get all 3 for even less that way.

Hope this helps.

Pollock, did you reflash your bios with the latest one? The original BH6 bios does not support Cel566. If I were you I'd recheck EVERYTHING including the seating of the display card, memory, cpu socket or adapter, power cables, keyboard etc.. If you managed to bump your AGP card out of its slot (you wont be able to see it with your eyes, just push it back in) your computer wont boot...

I'd try all those before investing money for new parts.

And pollock, to my knowledge Abit BH6 1.2 controls CPU voltage solely through bios, the jumper positions shouldnt be relevant.
If you flashed the bios to support 566 the voltage should be set automatically.

Try booting the computer holdind down insert key after shutting it down from mains. It resets all bios settings.
