SCOTTY WE NEED MORE POWER!!!!!!!!
« on: December 30, 2000, 08:37:00 PM »
OK here is the deal.

Athlon 800
128mb pc-133 sdram
25gb hd
Logitech toejamstick
laser mouse
Takstar headphones
250 watt power supply
THE QUESTION!
will the 250 watt powersupply be enough to power everything above PLUS a Voodoo5 5500?

I also have another 250watt powersupply from my old system so if worse came to worse i was going to jerryrig that one to supply the voodoo by itself. SO WHAT IM ASKING IS!

is the 250 enough?
if no is just jerry rigging another powersupply for the voodoo's needs ok to do?

the other powersupply will not be in my case but will prolly sitting behind it, i can make it turn on and stuff without it being in the case by switching it separatly.

what will or should i do?

My option would be to bite the bullet and buy an appropriate case with a 300 watt power supply and move everything into it. Splicing a second power supply into the board looks like a short trip to fried electronincs to me buddy.

It would probably be a bad idea to add the second PS Wobble.  The Voodoo wouldn't share the same ground as the rest of the system, which would be a bad thing.  It might work, but I wouldn't take a chance with as good of a system as you have.

Excellent 300W supplies are less than $60 US.

uugghh, i just dont feel like buying another powersupply.  I have to save for other stuff right now. I will probably stick it on my 250 watt and leave it at that, unless there is some catastrophic problem then i migh do something but my main goal is NOT to have to buy anything else.

Wobble,

By sticking to your main goal of not buying anything else you may put yourself in to the position of having to buy EVERYTHING again! Change you goal to having everything right and working properly. That may save you money far easier than trying to make it work on the cheap now....

Good luck buddy.

A PS too small shouldn't "fry" anything... it will just do weird toejam.

I'd go with it as is and upgrade if you need to.

BTW, the Athlon sucks much more juice than the P3, so it's more of a concern with the Athlon.  However, the V5 has a separate 4-pin power connector instead of using the AGP bus power, so I suspect it will be more tolerant than runnign a GeForce2 would be in the same setup.

If you want to use the other 250W supply, instead of hooking it up to the video card, which could cuse ground-loop problems, you could use the second supply to power your peripherals (i.e. hard drive, floppy, cd-rom).
This might give you the overhead you need to run the higher performance video card without the risk of damaging components.

EUREKA!
it worked flawlessly Instant 500 watt powersupply now
now i just have to wait for the card to get here tommorrow.

Now will I have enough?
1st 250 w PS:
Hard disk
Cd-rom and RW
Floppy

2nd 250 w PS
Mobo
Athlon 800
128mb pc-133
mouse and kybd
*Voodoo5 5000  ???

Will taking the burden of the Hard disks, Cd-roms and flyppy drives (2 of each)
free up enough power for the other PS to accomadate the V5 5500 now??
it is done with no errors and everything is running just dandy.

You should be good to go Wobble.

Your peripherals don't need a common ground with the motherboard, but all your motherboard stuff must use a common ground.

The HD alone uses up quite a bit of power, so I would think your ready for some clear sailing on the video card.
