I read a few months ago that PC Tools had been purchased by Symantec. Does this purchase now make PC Tools the virus that Norton is?

I already thought it was. A lot of these things that say they help your comp only hurt them they take over and do crazy things.

I wouldn't use that program if the company paid me. Back in the old Win98SE and before days, such programs weren't as destructive...since Win2000 there is just to many things such programs can really mess up.

Glary utilities, free download from download.com, easy enough for anyone with opposable thumbs to use.
Yet has individual tools for power users who know what they are doing.

What I like most, we'll use their startup manager as an example.
Click on the startup manager in GU, box pops up with everything that is currently set to start when windows starts in a list. Unsure what one of those entrys is? Highlight it, right click "google it".

Web browswer pops up, you get the "official" answer as to exactly what the program is, if it should be enabled, should be disabled, or can be left to your choice. Plus you get other peoples opinions.

So as you go through each entry, its "teaching" you whats starting when windows starts. And which ones might be best to leave be, which ones can be safely turned off.

Does the same thing for process manager!

And it does a really good job of cleaning out the garbage in its 1 step scan and fix problems.
Which checks and fixes registry, shortcuts, as well as checking for malware, etc.

You want a really good set of tools for free that you can teach your grampa to run, get Glary Utilities.

There is nothing on the Threatfire page about any merger or buyout.

I'd hate to think they'd buy PC tools so they could remove threatfire from the market.

I just removed all PC Tools programs from my computer, including "TreatFire"; I simply don't trust Symantec.

Most of these 'utilities' do more damage than any good especially in the hands of someone who doesn't understand what they're doing.

No different than any other tool ripley. Can be used to build or fix something, or can be used to beat someone in the head or take their eye out.

Personally I've been able with the help of GU and skype to get several squad members computers cleaned up to the point where they can fly AH again. Reducing the # of processes, and programs that start when windows starts. Clean up loads and loads of garbage so they can actually get half decent frame rates.

I suppose I should just tell everyone to send their PC's to you instead.

None of which gives you any right to come pee in my wheatie's like that.
