Here is what I would build comes out to 721.47 less rebates if any.

Case:              NZXT M59 - 001BK
Motherboard:   GA-EP43T-UD3L
CPU:              Core 2 Duo E8400
Memory:         G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Video Card:     EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB
PSU:              CMPSU-650TX
Hard Disk:       HD103SJ 1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s
DVD:              Any 20 ~ 25 will do

Totals about $750.00 to do it yourself

I agree. For another couple hundred bucks. Yea you can build a much better system.
I was going by the thread title of a $500 system

A person can always spend more money for something better. Some people may not have the extra money togo that extra mile. 500.00  or close to it will make a computer that will play this game, preferably put together at home and not a prebuilt to save thew extra few bucks that can be spent on the system.

True cattb but given a choice to wait a month or two to save some extra money.  Some people might just wait, I did, I bought my puter piece by piece over a 6 month period, and it plays ah with everything on including self shadows at 2480(or whatever).  We just giving choices and options, it's up to people to decide how they spend their moneu :).

Your absolutly correct, I would have to agree. As long as the person has the option to be able and put that extra x(variable) amount of dollars in the bank and save for something better. :)

I built one for my sister with a Sempron 140, and a used HD 2600 Pro. It runs Aces High 2 just fine on her 1024x768 monitor - for about $200 w/Windows 7!

We put a fxf hd4770 gpu in killer91's computer a few months back. If I remember right, with v-sync off his fps went up over 1000 when he look up in the sky. For comparison bravoa8 has a evga gtx260, his fps were only around 700 looking up at clear sky. I have a visiontech hd4650, my fps  were 258. My card is only one that was overclocked at the time.
That 4770 is an awesome card for the money. Think I gave $104 for it at Amazon.

Had all the eye candy turned off w/1024 resolution.

WHOA!!! Hehe TD, the above system is nearly identical to the budget rig I am building for my 10 year old. Actually, he will be building it himself, under my supervision. I am using a case and power supply I already had in my "parts bin", otherwise the hardware you mentioned is the same!!
