Question re Axis Fleet Billet
« on: July 29, 2010, 04:26:02 PM »
I'm not exactly sure who to send this to, so transmitting in the blind.

I've noticed that the Axis Fleet Capt billet is still open.  Is there a reference somewhere of what the Captain's responsibilities are?  Is he authorized to maneuver his units freely or just babysit on the bridge as his fleet follows a predetermined course?  Can he be bumped during the scenario frames by a higher ranking player or is the position permanent, until death due us part and/or sunk/relieved by higher authority for incompetence (quite understandable)?  I believe I read somewhere that certain guns were for AA and other were for enemy fleet engagements.  Are these weps auto or manually operated by the Capt?

I'd appreciate some answers to these questions, and to any other Intel that would be deemed pertinent by the Creators of this event.  Please advise at your earliest convenience.  Thank you in advance for any forthcoming clarifications.

Yes, I'm an old airedale sailor, but still find it interesting to occasionally switch up to fleet activities, dependent upon how involved the role is.

Currently signed up with the 341 Air Group.

Howdy, Saltee.

It depends a little on how the CO wants to do it.  My guess is both CO's would want the Fleet Captain to handle a lot as he sees fit.  Fleet Captain certainly will be maneuvering fleets when they are under air attack, manning the manned AA guns during air attack, maneuvering the fleet while in naval engagements, and manning the big guns during naval engagements.

Send the CO of your side a PM to enquire just in case he doens't see this topic.

Thanks for the question.

The Fleet Commander does have a mission, but he also commands the fleets and is under orders to perform needed resupply. For Example, The Test Frame and Frame 1, his mission is to command:

Two Japanese Reinforcement Convoys (Visayan Sea)
One Japanese Destroyer Group (Visayan Sea)

1.  Japanese Reinforcement Convoy: Each Convoy shall consist a 4 destroyers along with a cruiser and a carrier. Destroyers are carrying troups. The carrier will represent merchant shipping and will not have flight enabled.
2.  Japanese Destroyer Group: Each Group shall consist of 4 destroyers and a cruiser.

Orders are listed in the Rules Link here: http://www.ahevents.org/images/stories/scenarios_images/201007_philippinePhandango/rules.html

On Frame 1, there is a "Broken" link for the specific orders. Here is one I saved.
http://www.kkenshome.com/images/ORDERS-FRAME1.pdf

Specifically,
"A destroyer group shall escort two transport groups from the Visayan  Sea to the area just off the coast of A21 and maintain station there until midnight."
EDIT: A-21 is on the west side of Leyte Island
Here is a map listed in the Rules link:

K-KEN:

And thank you sir for being ever vigilant re the forums!

Ok, I was under the assumption that there was a capt for each fleet/group.  Am I correct that the capt will be responsible for maneuvering and defending multiple surface groups?  If so, he must have the technology to "beam" from group to group, as needed, right?  Or do I need to pull my head out from where the sun don't shine, shut up and just read the damn instructions?   :O

I don't know where to begin!  But yes, the Fleet Commander will have to independently operate all fleet components.

If under attack, and we won't discuss much strategy here, you *may* or *may not* have multiple gunners available.

As far as moving between ships, the dot command will work or you can exit one and double click on the other like changing any base, like now.

Copy, tactical comsec in effect.  Have "secured" details to discuss, if this pans out.

Granted, there's no vertical factor in effect, unless sinking, but it seems to me to be a bit like trying to manage 3 separate bombers inbd to 3 different targets.  Not only do you have to individually navigate them, but also operate their def/off weapontry.  I see this as kinda like having 3 different personalities with each having 1-3 sub personalities...all wanting to get out at the same time.  I am wondering about being so overloaded that timely justice can't be given to any situation that might arise with the fleets.

Just got in some fleet time offline.  I've got a handle on moving the individual fleets (C13 & 20 in this case) and doing the group jump for initial placement.  It can be tedious and sometimes confusing (hopefully, "friendly collisions" will be allowed...lol), but I'm still interested.  A couple more questions:

1.  Is there a dot command (or something) to control the speed of individual fleets (ie; the carriers), or am I thinking of when I was online with Brand "X"?  If so, what's the $%&*# command to bring the HUD back up so there's an idea of course and speed?

2.  Will the fleet AA weps be auto-capable?

3.  Will the fleet surface-to-surface weps be auto-capable?

I did read were they would be at reduced lethality, but am concerned that if I get distracted, whether they will automatically defend themselves rather I'm there or not.

Saltee you really need to take this to the Axis forum.

However, you will only have 20 mm and 8 inch guns manable.

Auto ack is on at a very low lethality.

Ship speed is constant.

Fleet jumps will be done by the CM on your side.
