Guitarists, have you tried to play....
« on: August 14, 2010, 07:19:39 PM »
Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover"?

I always seem to mess it all up at that first sweeping arpeggio (about 2 and a half minutes in).  Any advice or stories of how you got through this great but frustrating song?

Make sure you have a fire extinguisher close.  Your pick hand will burn for an hour after that one.   :rock

Yep, is awesome live. Saw them open for Heart in 76 (?) Remember when trying to play that- there are 3 rhythm/ lead guitars. Not trying to play all 3 parts together I hope :rofl

As my mind wanders back to my early twenties..........Remember guitar player magazine with the sound page that you could play on your turntable and follow along with the lesson of printed material as well. I'm sure "Cliffs of Dover" was one of them. It may help if you ever find one, or for that matter if you still have a turntable.
No thank you Turkish, I'm sweet enough.

Never tried that one. It is a great song. He's a tone freak. Been stuck on Hendrix, Rory and Stevie for last ...

Best way to learn a difficult piece is to work slow, one bar at a time.  "He would work for a week just to get a four note phrase down"..Don't rem who said that, but it was about some duffer named Clapton.

Actually saw Outlaws last August. Green Grass still sounds great along w rest of their stuff.

When I get it to a point that I wouldn't be embarrassed for others to hear it, I'll go ahead and record it.  Until then, I'll wallow in my frustration alone.  :D
