Older machine died Looking to canniblise on the cheap

And by on the cheap. I mean as cheap as possible

Old Emachine that my wife and daughter were using died. Fans but no post.
Daughter said the screen went scrambled. so she tried to reboot. But now fans spin up but nothing posts.

Im guessing CPU, Mainboard. or both.

Already tried pulling the memory and trying 1 stick at a time resetting the CMOS, and installing a seperate video card.


Anywho.
They dont do much with it so they dont need much. Wife does her facebook junk,Email and pictures..no editing. just storing and printing.
Daughter just basically chats and surfs the web.

Hard drive shouldnt be a problem. Cases I also have that can be used
But what about the memory?

Any CPU & motherboards still out there that will still take DDR memory?

I'd be more inclined to suspect power supply at this point, myself.  It's more likely to just up and die than either the processor or the motherboard, actually.

I don't know of anything still being made that will take DDR - and given that you can get a decent (for the kind of general computer you are talking about) emachines from Newegg for 350-389, I wouldn't spend a lot or futz about to much with used stuff, unless it comes from reputable sources.  Doesn't mean that no one is still making one, though.

If you could narrow it down to what's dead for sure, you might try the Aces High classified forum and post a "anyone have?" post.

I have ddr memory and cpu and was looking for a motherboard to build a PC. All I could find was overpriced motherboards on ebay and most without a warranty or very little.
I found it would be cheaper to build a cheap ddr2 PC rather than to use the old parts.

I'd be inclined to just build a new machine and use the old OS.  Even with a decent dedicated video card it would likely be less than $400 (maybe $350) and thats all new everything.  Actually, the newer ATI onboard graphics chips are supposed to be pretty good for non-gaming machines.

Here's an example I whipped together on newegg; quality components; onboard audio/video; $333 plus there's at least one mail-in rebate; have to re-use your OS/mouse/keyboard/monitor.  You could still get by cheaper:

best buy has some computers for around 400 including monitor.  they're not the best but if all you do is some simple tasks, then its prolly the way to go.  or you may want to try an inexpensive laptop too.

Yea  I know I can get or build a machine on the supercheap.
I was hoping just to get a new mainboard and CPU and just re use all the rest of the parts. I Was hoping to find for around $100. Which checking at Newegg. I can do but the memory is the hangup.

Its been a miserable and in some ways bizarre summer business wise. Which is leaving me uber concerned about the winter. so Im not looking to spend a penny more then I absolutely have to.
On the other side. Im not going to let the wife/kid have free access to my machine either. Lest I want to spend half my free time unmucking it up LOL

Theirs, inasmuch as they seem to refuse to want to listen to me when I tell them to stop installing crap they dont need. I just let it go for a couple of months then clean it up when they start complaining.

I Have another machine here from the same friend I got the last one from that I have to get around to cleaning up.
since his wife just bought herself a new laptop and is in no rush to get this one back I might just make him an offer on that one.
Or scan the trash for one someone is throwing away.

To answer that question.. NO.  SDRam (DDR1) has been dead for a long time now.  The only way you're going to find a motherboard to support this would be to find one used.

Considering the light use of it all, you can get an ITX Motherboard (with intergrated Processor and Graphics) and one gig of DDR2-800 Ram for under $100.  Don't expect it to do much with games, but for basic computing it should work just fine.

Of course, if the power supply is fried, then it's going to cost a bit more.

TD Mentioned refurbished systems... those can be had for close to $100 as well.  Granted it's dated technology, but it's still available.  There are many vendors selling these systems (I bought one of these deals for my ex-father in law.. and it's still working fine after 3 years).  One example is THIS ONE at tigerdirect.com

Even then though at the worst. Im only looking to replace the MB and CPU if I can get away with it. Memory if I have to. And if I hav eot go that route. Im just going to end up building a better system anyway
Everything else I have I can cannibalize. The Hard drive is SATA. Besides the one thats in the machine I actually have a couple of CDROM drives laying around here.
the last one I bought I only did because I could. not because I had to LOL
I have 3 cases that are more then suitable for my needs. One of which is a great case but needs a paint job. The Emachines case. And a case I picked up a bunch of years ago for a build I did for my wife where the only thing wrong with it is it contains a fully working socket A system LOL

Anyway. the next coupe days should give me a clearer picture of what I can or cant do.
