Bf 110E(C-4B) 5./Zg 1 "Wasp"
« on: June 28, 2018, 10:30:36 PM »
Bf 110E flown by Willi Dibowski of 5./Zg 1 in July 1942. This aircraft was photographed after crash landing with flak damage sustained while attacking Soviet tanks near Woroschilowgrad, Ukraine. This 110 features camouflage in the early war scheme of colors RLM 71 and 02 over 65 with heavy splotches of RLM 70 on the fuselage sides and tail. Yellow theater markings are seen on the underside of the wings and a band around the tail. The squadron color of red is seen on the tip of the prop spinner and aircraft ID letter of "E".

Excellent work  :aok
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Wow! Your side air brush work looks like it was air brushed on.

Thanks. The camouflage mottling is the most difficult and time consuming part of doing Luftwaffe skins.

I use a Wacom brand pen and tablet for free hand work. It's so much better than a mouse.

In Gimp, I select the airbrush tool and set the brush size and opacity for the desired level of overspray. On the 110 it's a 15 pixel fuzzy circle set to 30% opacity. For the RLM 70, I set the opacity higher and used a smaller circle.

With these type of schemes the mottling can take upwards of an hour per color, per side, to get right. The 110 is particularly challenging since there is a seam in the bitmap that runs from the prop spinners to the gauge cluster on the nacelle sides. This make blending these mottle shapes incredibly difficult. I figure the total time making the mottling on this scheme is about 10 hours.

I think you're getting the hang of it.  Looks amazing.  :aok
