Helicopter
« on: September 12, 2010, 09:19:40 PM »
Today there was a profesional company in my little town giving helicopter rides for $35. I've never flown before so I jumped at the chance to ride. We take off and the pilot whips that thing around and off we go. We flew out of town about 8 miles and followed the highway out to the local lake. On the way out there the pilot decides to show me and my bro how fast it could stop. We climbed about a good bit in the process and the temp droppes 8 degrees (pilot had his door off so it was noticable). It felt pretty nice up there :D The guy liked to follow the highway so any sharp turn it made so did we. Was a blast when he'd lay that copter almost on its side to follow the turns in the road. After we got to the lake we buzzed a guy on a jet ski. Almost positive his pants turned brown. After we circle the lake and look at the houses out there we come back in to town and follow the main highway through town back to the soccer field we took off from and land. Was pretty epic for my first time flying

Sounds like you had alot of fun! I've never flown in a helicopter, but I will jump at the next chance I get!

Come on now Chewie, you know they have the good stuff over there on the Army side.  Did you ever ride in a CH-46 or 53?  We're not even mentioning the early Ospreys either.  My biggest poop my pants moments have been probably in this order.

1.  Riding an Osprey from one of the ranges on Lejeune to New River
2.  Direct and Indirect fire in the sandbox
3.  Trying to ride through a ditch with my motorcycle
4.  One CH-53 ride to Haditha Dam then to Al-Qaim
5.  Landing on a rocking ship in a CH-46

I'm sure there are others but those spring to mind right now.

A family friend used to own a bunch of UH-1 Hueys that he used for spraying stuff, photographing pine bettle infestations and things like that. He got roped into providing some for filming a movie and then got into using them and his Ex-Army Viet Nam vet pilots for different movies back in the mid-80s. Anyway he made a killing and then sold the company to someone else and now he is sailing around the world on his clock and he pops up occasionally to say hello.

Anyway he used to give me rides in those Hueys quite a bit and I even learned how to rappel out of them from an ex LRRP that he had working for him. Never quite liked doing that but hey it was fun to ride them into a hole in the forest and have the pilots telling us they were doing it just like they did in Nam for us only a little slower. So working on the forestry side I got to do some pretty wild stuff when we went out with the choppers.
