Feel free to correct our data.

BTW - this list is a compilation of over 10 years of research from this group and other WWII historians such as (in no particular order):
Soda, Brady, Karnak, Ack-Ack, Shifty, Saxman, Masherbrum, thorsim, Soulyss, Lusche, Krusty, Guppy35, and myself.

If someone could transfer this to the AH Wiki... that would be AWESOME...  :x

Are the "service dates" meant as in when an aircraft entered service or when it first saw combat? In many cases that is the same when considering one month's tolerance. But for example in Brewster's case the difference is more than a year.

Ok, the reason I asked is that Brewsters were deployed to service into an operational unit in the spring of 1940 but Finland wasn't in war at a time and they first fired their guns in anger in June 1941.

Also, the I-16 we have in AH is a very different aircraft compared to the ones that saw action in Spanish civil war. The first M-63 engined variants were produced in 1940.

Well I'm not sure if this is any help, I just finished rereading "Soldier in the Cockpit" by Ron Pottinger. He was in 3 Sqdrn, the first to receive the Tempest.

In his log he states the first operational sortie for the Tempest as Wednesday, May 3rd 1944. It was a Fighter Sweep from RAF Newchurch to the following cities; Mardyck, Lille, Armentieres, and Berch. He also notes that the squadron had been completely converted over to the Tempest by this date. The Squadron received their first 2 Tempests' on February 28th 1944.

Hope that helps someone.   :salute

WMaker ->Brewster - spring of 1940 - would that be March/April?  And I'll change the I-16 to 1940 - any idea on the month?

Baumer -> I'll update the Tempest to show 5/44 as its first operational use.

Thanks guys.

You're welcome.

And just some further info from the book, it looks like the first operational sortie for the Typhoon IB was sometime in the 3rd week of May of 43. He (Ron Pottinger) and 4 others were sent to 3 Squadron as replacement pilots after the first operational Typhoon sortie. He arrived at 3 Squadron 26 May 1943.

Not to split hairs but the Typhoon IB we have in game is very different, from the first operational Typhoon IB's. The original Typhoon IB's had the car door canopy and three bladed props with the early Napier Saber IIA. The Typhoon we have in game is a later version with a Saber IIC and a 4 bladed prop (not to mention the bubble canopy). So I'm not exactly sure what the operational date should be for the version we have, but I suspect it would be very late in 43 or more likely, early 44 to be accurate.

True and valid points - where do we draw the line on the service date?

As a counter point, we do know the IB variant was first used as you mentioned in May of 43.  But there were a lot of minor tweaks and changes to all aircraft models, i.e. adding rear-view mirrors, different control sticks, upgraded or different suspension in landing gear, that were added later while they were in service from recommendations of the mechanics, ground crews, and pilots.

How do we determine a service date that is accurate yet addresses the gameplay variants we seek in Aces High for scenarios and events in the arenas?  Tough call...

What would you have it at?

I know it's a very complex issue to compare actual service dates to the planes in Aces High, especially when you are trying to design a historical situation. I wish there was a simple answer, but in reality it's very complicated to find good plane match-ups for historical events (as you well know).

I think the answer to your question has two parts. First, for the historically accurate operational date of the Typhoon IB I think it should be listed as 5/43. However because the Typhoon IB we have is very different from the initial delivered planes I'd include an asterisk to denote the difference.

And the second part of you answer is this, I think looking at the plane set balance is more important than setting an arbitrary date. So if you were to include the Typhoon IB in a mid to late 43 set-up, I would look at adding 190A-8 to balance the event, even thought it wasn't operational yet. I know this is the stuff that CM's go over and over designing either an event, or an AvA setup, and it's a complicated business.

First 152-H's became operational on the 2 of November 1944 with the forming of Erprobungskommando 152 under the command of Bruno Stolle.
