NO-Icon is still a good idea. But, I doubt you gents have bothered to test and understand all of the idiosyncrasies of your monster.....
I have...just because I'm an a-hole, and I've gotten shot down in there more times just looking at the differences in the contrast of dots instead of paying attention to what was going on. If you don't have detailed water turned on, some 109s and all U.S. Navy planes low on the water are hard to spot until their basic shapes start to render. As dots, they are black. Zeke's, Spits, some Russian planes and most USAF planes tend to be gray dots instead of black dots. Depending on your graphics settings in game, the basic plane shape will render somewhere between 1.5k and 3k with the default skin showing until you get within visual range for your system to render the skin being used by the other player...assuming of course that you have the same skin downloaded on your system and do not have other player skins turned off.

If you don't mind getting shot down a lot in the MA's, turning the enemy icons on/off is a good way to see some of the things that I mentioned and give you fairly easy to memorize reference points for distances.

I stopped in briefly last night.  The first bogey I saw ran from me and then doubled back when his buddy arrived.  They b&z'd my p40e for about 5 minutes before they killed me.  Not sayin it's an ava thing, but it was a sub par ava experience.  At least the terrain was awesome though!

i was in there from about 730 till around 930'ish. the closest thing to bnz i saw, was usually someone that'd come down for the "B" part, but then forget about the "NZ" part.......those normally turned into massive(between 5 and 10 evenly matched) furballs.

and as i mentioned in another thread....something i'[ve seen requested on these very boards true night time. i died during that night time. the trees are over modeled.

Night time and no icons?  That would be absurd..

it actually wasn't. i was at about 8k alt here.

looking for the bad guys. i could hear em, just couldn't see em. silent6, and ezrhino were down low....they spotted them.

once ya got to where you could see the actual shape of the plane, it was quite easy. not easy to kill....but easy to id that there was a bad guy in front(or in my case in back) of ya.

a couple others, whos names i don't remember, and to be completley honest, i didn't hear a single bad word.  the night only lasted for 5 minutes......but it was a looong 5 minutes too.  :devil

I know some players who have a dark monitor.  They would stand no chance.  Turning up the gamma to the max would give you a huge advantage and also melt your eyeballs.

Hello Grizz,

As someone who has very obvious good site lines as far as setting up shots I wanted to get your take.  Is it the lack of icons? Is it a bug? Is it that we have gotten used to the "big red here I am and I am this far away" icon to get shot opportunities and maintain SA?

 :salute

i was kind of getting at the fact that i've flown against grizz....he's good.....very good........i'd almost think something like this could add to the fun, whereas right now, as things are, it's gotta be almost routine for him to land multiple kills with ease......

Whoa fellas I'm not dogging on the no icons setup at all.  I think it is interesting and adds a new element to a dogfight.  However there is sacrifice that comes with it.  When you aren't in a close quarters fight, you have to basically stick your nose up against your monitor looking for bad guys (at least I did last night), which I don't think is very fun(is that an airplane or a bush?).  Heck, it would almost be better if there were icons at 5k out that disappeared as you got closer into the 2k range.  Is that a silly request?  Maybe, but it would at least improve my fun as I wouldn't have troubles at least locating the enemy in a sparce arena up until the point of ACM combat where the icon crutch disappears. My 2c, but it definitely has promise!
