Moniter will not turn on
« on: September 28, 2010, 06:46:35 AM »
Yesterday, I bought a power supply for my computer because between the sound card and the video card there was too much output. So I got all of this together and when I went to go turn it on, the monitor would not come on.  To me its as if it doesn't recognize the monitor, the video card is working  but it doesn't turn on the monitor, same thing with the default port that comes with it, just doesn't recognize it.
Any ideas?

Is the monitor not turning on, or is it not showing a picture but still "powered on"?  If it's not powering on than it's dead or not plugged in right (pretty simpe solutions there).  If it's not showing a picture it could be that the bcklight is dead, or the computer is not putting out a signal.  If possible test another monitor on the computer, and test the "dead" one on another comp.  If the computer isn't putting out a signal it could be that you have a dead GPU or an under-powered GPU, or in a very-rare instance your DVI/VGA/HDMI cable/port suddenly went bad.

What PSU did you buy and what type of system do you have?

Does the video card have a separate power connector?  If so, are you sure you got it plugged into the new power supply.

Details about the CPU/RAM/Video card and what power supply you bought might help as well.

Forgetting to attach the small plug on the MB will cause that too.

I'll have to check for all of that because I also noticed that even the USB ports are not even working. I think what it is is that the power supply is running but it's not connected right or something. It still doesn't explain why all of the fans on the computer are working.

For the sound card and the power supply it comes from a company called rocketfish. The power supply is 500 watts. The video card is an evga geforce 9400gt. I just added another two gigs of ram so now there is three. It's an HP computer

It is an HP computer?  There is a good chance the power supply will not work with the HP motherboard.  Typically HP and Dell changes things just enough to make them proprietary.

So if it turns on it's just that all that it's doing? If so what would you recommend for a power supply for HP?

You would need to contact HP about it.
