Strange inopportune screen hangs
« on: October 06, 2010, 12:48:09 AM »
Recently, as of the latest patch, sometimes when in a fight with many cons, the screen will occasionally hang for half a second or so, causing all sorts of challenges when flying (and I'm sure causing me to warp to my opponents too).

It appears as if the Video driver is crashing due to the way Aces High is interacting with it. Its unclear if this is driver bug or a HTC bug but users have reported it happening with both ATI and Nvidia cards. To find more information on the various use-cases and system setups that users have experienced it, please look at this thread...

A crash dump file is posted here...

Ardy,

This will probably be minimally helpful. I have the same video card, CPU and sound card. Win7 64bit. I was getting the same video TDR's frequently that you are. I slowed them down a bit by doing the following.

Go into the NVIDIA Control Panel and make sure of the following:

1. Adjust Desktop Color Settings ---> Choose how Color is Set---->Use NVIDIA Settings.
After that set Digital Vibrance to about 75% and all of the pixels in the game will show greater contrast to each other. You will see objects with more clairity. I took no FPS hit making this change. In the AvA you can see the 109's hiding against the ground.

2. Adjust Desktop Size and Position--->Use NVIDIA Scaleing.

3. In the games sound setup. Set all sound sources except the microphone to Windows Primary Sound Driver and Windows Speaker configuration.

It seems to work out better to let the NVIDIA card process color and screen resolution as the primary source instead of Windows or the game.  But the reverse with sound. Lately if I do get a Video TDR, more often the game will hang at a black screen then recover within 30 seconds. Wonder if D3DX9_40.dll has anything to do with this, it is a 2008 version. D3DX9_43.dll is out and is a Feb-2010 version. I'm only thinking this because most of the problems with TDR are on Vista and Win7 64bit.

But, then I have no knowlege of HTC's reverse compatability strategy or implementation of D3DX9_xx.dll's.
