Hardware problems!
« on: June 29, 2000, 07:32:00 AM »
Okay, heres the scenario:
ASUS P2B Mother board, with Intel P2-350mhz chip.

Flashed BIOS and updated with latest ASUS V1012 BIOS.  Rebooted.  No problems, everything honky dory.

Removed 350 chip and installed Intel P3 550mhz chip.  Changed jumpers to 550 config. per ASUS webpage.  Booted up, cool, 550mhz shows on boot etc.  Everything runs fine.  I go into AH and notice a 12 FPS increase.  Now Im jazzed!  Shut down puter, reboot  it, do the same thing, as I execute a program,  the screen goes black, blinking lite on front of computer.

Upon inspection, no power to  the chip, fans not turning on the chip.  Power is supplied to Video card chip fan on one of the slots, but no power to the Intel chip.

I re-install the old chip, change the jumpers back...still no power to the chip  fan, nor  the chip.

WTF is wrong?! Bad motherboard? Bad power supply?(if bad power supply, why does it prvide power to some areas of  the  MB but  not others?

Scenarios: If it is a bad MB, can I replace  the  old  one with an identical  MB without losing HD data?

At a loss here, and right before the holidays! Damn!

Rip.. assuming you've reseated the CPU, and u didn't cook it the first time around from over heating... (unlikely)  Then you probably toasted your Main Board. Elctro static discharge... loose screw causing short... PC gods didn't like your sacrifice and now your being punished.  Look for a loose screw making contact with the MB.. if not.. call manufactuere and get it replaced under warranty and pray your CPU isn't cooked either.

MB is not under warranty anymore, but question:  Will the HD have to be reformatted in order to replace the old MB with an identical new MB?  (I'm assuming the worse..)

It doesn't matter what "type" of HD your using. as long as u get an identical board and you do not have a network interface card (LAN card) integrated on the MB, then all you have to do is replace the board and if there is no damage to any other components,, cpu.. hd.. ram... you'll be up and runnin again.

If u gotta buy a new board.. maybe upgrade time... get one of the new asues's with 133mhz bus. you can always tune it down to what you have now.. leave u upgrade options in the future.  if this is what you do... u can still just slap it in there and boot up.. (baring other failures again) you'll have to redetect ALOT fo stuff and load drivers.. but it should work.  The recomended way to do it is to install the hard ware and go ground up with your software, but i've changed Mother boards out from OS very often.. and encounter problems only occasionally.

I've just one question have you checked the voltage for your CPU ?

Are you sure to have set the jumper on the good position for the P2-350 on your last try ?

Bad news :
My hypothese is that your MB is dead
But check if it's not in contact any part of your PC tower

Good news:
Concerning your HD keep it it would be ok

Hope it help ...

Ripper,

If you get the same MB, put everything in the same slots, it may config itself the same way, and you shouldn't need to format.

Man those MB are exspensive. Good thing the ones I use aren't.

Reformat every few months keeps the bogged down cpu away.

Many Many thanks for all the info guys, taking it in to 'the shop' in two hours, will let you know when surgery is finished.  Hopefully I can get this puppy up and running before the long week-end (Prays).

Talk about disheartening, seeing my much improved FR for 5 min. then nothing! I had a difficult time sleeping last night, I guess my spare time really does revolve around PC's...should I seek help?

Is the drive partitioned?

If the drive is a single partition you should be able to put it in any puter and expect it work fine given all the same perif's.  Do

As you are now upgrading <g>

Why don't you take a MSI 6163pro or an Asus P3V4X ?
With soft menu you can overclock without pain   and without those F* jumper

Rip may be to late but you can pretty much change all ASUS boards with another ASUS board and not need to reformat. I just changed from the P2B to the P3V4X Yetserday and did not reformat. Check bios to see if fan is turned on. Cant remeber if you can shut it down on that one or not.

No partitions, thankfully~!  This is what I intend to  do if I am to lose data, going to instruct them to remove the exiting HD and put a new one in if the new MB is going to require a re-format.  Thanks!@
