Kamikaze In FSO
« on: October 19, 2010, 11:22:07 AM »
How about assigning a bomb value to Japanese aircraft in FSO late war set ups so pilots in outclassed
aircraft can "Break some divine wind" on enemy ships as in the real war. This would also force the allied pilots
to adopt the "Nothing gets through" defensive posture that made the allied defensive strategy so intense.
It would help create the balance that late war pacific ops sometimes lack due to aircraft performance.
Input from other FSO junkies is appreciated

This would also force the allied pilots to adopt the "Nothing gets through" defensive posture that made the allied defensive strategy so intense.

That's always my posture when I'm tasked to defend a base.  Turning Japanese fighters into bombs won't change the defensive strategy.  I think I'm fairly safe in saying most every FSO player would concur.

Sounds different, not sure many would want to do it though. I probably wouldnt mind for 1 frame.

un-ethical!

Even ignoring ethics and respect, it's outright pointless. There is NO situation where I can envision kamikazes being good for gameplay. I don't know what all logs the CMs have access to, but for Special Events it must be a NIGHTMARE for them to determine whether a kamikaze actually "completed" its mission or was shot down or crashed before it reached the target. And I know that *I* for one wouldn't want to use my one life in an event to go smash my plane into a target. I wouldn't want to fight against them under circumstances where there's NONE of the aids available historically to CAPs.

Keep in mind that AAA is DRASTICALLY toned down from Main Arena norms in special events, and IF radar is even enabled at all, it's at a FAR reduced range than what it would have been historically. The vast majority of kamikazes were sighted on radar and slaughtered by CAP while they were still well out of range of the task groups.

Another example of why better realism does not mean better game.

Thanks to the guys who have adressed the topic reasonably so far.
As to ethics, by that logic there should be no axis planes at all since fascist expansionism was inherently evil.
Thats the opinion of an old bomber pilot i used to go fishing and drink homemade schnapps with when i lived in germany and i'll take his word for it.
Apparently, as it turns out, it has been done before. They used spotters to tabulate hits.
I didn't mean to imply all japanese planes, just special strike groups or something of the low end planes.
It would as you said sax, make the mission quite intense for allied defenders but also for those trying to break through. More comments in the FSO section for those interested in the subject. :salute

Not more intense. NOT. FUN.

CVs can be VERY difficult and frustrating to defend now as it is. I know, I spent about 2 years in FSO and defended many a carrier in that time. And this is against strike craft that are trying to make it back from their attacks alive. The way radar and AAA is handled in events now DOES NOT SUPPORT this.
