As a bonus point: what year (our calendar) does the mayan calendar actually ends.  Hint: is not 2012.

Actually our sun will still be out on one of the outer arms of the Galaxy. If it went to the center we would all be hosed.

Correct, perhaps I wasn't clear:

December 21^st 2012 Common Era: the light from our sun (Sol) will appear to be alligned with the center of our galaxy (the Milky Way), from our vantage point on earth.  Some worry that this combined light may have negative effects, and might even end the world.

However, we will only know on that  (possibly fateful) day, no sooner, no later.

If the Mayans were so incredibly insightful that they could foretell the end of the world, why'd their culture fall?

you know once you think about it, the earth and the sun line up with the center of the galaxy every year. even if we were on a different axis wouldnt we start feeling the effects by now and 2012 be the high point of the exposure? right?

Wrong, the idea is that they are on vastly different axes, and that on this particular day, they will align.  Who knows what will happen, I'm betting on nothing.  Here's why:

The sun, it shines on us every day, and so does the galactic center, just because they aligned wouldn't do anything other than obscure the former with the latter.

If you really want to shake things up....google Project Bluebeam and read for about 30 minutes.  It's all very but the points they bring up are just a little too plausible if you consider current events.
