WIN98 Puked up a bunch of...
« on: November 07, 2001, 10:09:00 AM »
Yesterday, I'm doing just fine...check BBS here, check email, send some replies...
All normal stuff.

Log off, shutdown.
Come back 2 hours later, start up...WIN98 pukes on start.
Says "Failed to start"  Please reinstall Windows 98."
I click ok and an error, shell32.dll not found...
Copy that file from other PC...again...shlwapi.dll, then comctl32.dll, then crtdll.dll...
All files coppied in...explorer.exe unable to load.
I had to Format c: and install win98 again.
I didn't lose anything on the other partitions.

Anyone hear of a virus or something that does this?
BTW, I don't use Microsoft Email Clients. (Worm/Virus prevention  ;) )
I do however use IE 5.5

While it could possibly be a virus, it could just as easily be a hardware failure.  Ram going bad or a HDD failing would do that.

Don't spend a ton of time re-installing until you check out the hardware.

I wondered about that myself...checked plugs, cards, etc. All seem fine.
Have been running fine today.  Most of the software installed, multiple cold boots and she is still doing ok.
I guess sometimes they just puke.
