Please help, DSL problems
« on: April 11, 2001, 07:43:00 PM »
Would someone please help me. for the last few weeks i've been having more and more discoes. This is becoming a huge problem. i've had 6 today. I have 2 computers, one is an older p2 400 and works fine. the one i use now is a new athlon 1.1gig and i disco all the time on it. wtf?? i have checked many times and am sure i have all the needed softwhere loaded and i have a dummy ip set up.
When i disco the light on my dsl modem that says "ready" or "connected to server" stops its steady on and starts flashing, the same thing it does when i turn it on. i have to turn it off and turn it back on then reconnect when this happens. this is total bs. i'm not paying $35 a month to get discoed every 15 min, and i'm sure as hell not paying $30 a month to AH to get discoed everytime i get to an enemy field or get to the fight.
Please help
thanks

Is your DSL modem USB or Ethernet?

If Ehternet, check to see if you have an interrupt being shared with your Ethernet card.  I suspect that is what the problem is.

If it is USB, do you have any other USB devices connected?  If yes, you may have a driver that is not behaving properly on the USB bus.  USB devices have to share the same interrupt and if not correctly writtine could cause lost interrupts to occur.

Some motherboards can have problems with certain USB ADSL modems. The modem can draw more than the 500mA that is the recommended maximum for USB so the motherboard senses an overload and shuts it down. This tends to affect Athlon motherboards with VIA chipsets more than most. This problem doesn't affect Ethernet however.

USB modem issues are discussed a lot in the uk.telecom.broadband newsgroup as many UK ADSL users are saddled with a USB modem by British Telecom. Hope this helps.

Hogfarmr, go to Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools

and startup "System Information"

Once this program is started, you will want to view the Interrupts for the system.
In the left column of the data is the interrupt number, and the righ column shows the hardware device the interrupt is associated with.
You can ignore "steering" interrupts, but your mission is to find the hardware devices that are using the same interrupt number.
Once found, if any, your next mission will be to find a way to solve the sharing problem as it is what is causing your problems.  Sometimes this involves moving a card from one PCI slot to another, in other instances you can reassign interrupts in the BIOS Rom setup.
If not interrupts are sharing, then we go to the next level and next mission.

That should get you started.  This message will self-destruct in 30 seconds,..good luck.

I hope it's not a USB modem.    If it is you might have a very hard time getting it to work.  USB can be very unreliable when it comes to high bandwidth type devices like DSL modems.  If it is usb, the first thing I would try is going to www.viahardware.com  and downloading the "USB filter driver" and installing it.

Select "Hardware" and expand the list.  One of the options in the list is "IRQ's".  That is the one you want.  Make sure "Advanved Information" is selected from the options across the top of the data window.
