Note that if DX8.0 gave you joystick issues, you might want to try 8.0a

As usual, if it ain't broke, I wouldn't try to fix it.
However, if you are having problems 8.0a might help.

I had 7, got 8 and now have 8a no difference at all for me.

That seems like a lot of work and potential headaches to pick up less than 1 frame per second.
I'd probably stick with 7a for now.
