Werner Mork, pictured above at age 17, turned 18 (military age) just two months prior to the German Invasion of Poland. Although he did not see it as such at the time, he surrendered his youth to war and to the German army.

When the war broke out he rushed to enlist. He enlisted because he loved his country and felt himself to be a patriot. He enlisted because he admired and respected the country's leader had settled the social unrest in his small town that had manifested itself as almost daily riots in the streets.

It is good to read about the German solder's life (in depth) during the war.  At the end, most of them are no different then the rest of the world.

The SS alibi of a Nation good book, explaining a other "German Myth" about the German army.
The whole of German society was affected by the National Socialist's who throughout their rule placated every whim of the German volk 'war' 'living space' and a Empire.

The modern German is probly the most educated in regards to their own history.

Downfall was a very interesting film, but films and especially the History Chanel are limited in their perspectives.

Books are the means to learn about such things. (i have 20 years of books on the subject, i would rather fly cartoon planes it more fun)

There are no pies stored in this plane overnight
