New monitor, mixed reactions

Hi. I got a new View Sonic VX2739wm at $330. My eye sight is declining due to 10hrs/day work but I couldn't afford more.

Compared to Samsung P2770H and HP 2710m it's a lot cheaper so I don't expect the same quality although it has the fastest response time, adjustable.

Running 1920x1080 since the other resolutions are all bad quality.

I'm just wondering if it's normal that going from two 19" monitors, this new 27" seems to have the colors and definition of the lines ( e.g. icons the task bar and text in the browser tabs ) a bit "washed out"? It seems like there's too much brightness even when i manually play with bright./contrast.
It's the same effect we get in the game when we increase the "gamma" but I don't have that control on the monitor.

I also noticed that depending on the inclination of the monitor, the top section seems darker if I keep it perfectly vertical and not tilted fwd a bit.

Are these things to be expected for such a wide monitor?

Dmdfiat, this review says about the same as you with the washed out colours when gaming.

Ah, interesting review. I guess I wasn't dreaming.
My eye sight did go down after a year in front of the PC 10x7 building up my new e-commerce. That's why I need a bigger screen so that I can enlarge the text and still have multiple windows open.

The comparison with the dell ( around $1000 ) and the Nec ( much smaller size ) reinforces what I was afraid of. With my budget I can't get much better unless I find a good used monitor.

Interesting buy. One of the reviews mentioned: "it definitely is a little bit softer in focus. Colors are richer, but some small text does get a little bit fuzzy." which is similar to my problem.

Not sure if this is going the be an improvement. Urgh...now I can't decide

The specs seem the same:
It's a TN panel still.
Same aspect ration, same resolution, lower grade speakers, no USB ports same price and shipping. The reviews from people also talk about how nice the clarity is, just like my viewsonic....uhmmm.

The only way to find out is to return my viewsonic at costco. and try this one?!?!

I just ordered the HP 2710m too ( thanks Pudgie ). I will plug em side by side on my dual vid card and see which one to return. Both costco and HP will refund the full amount.

My Costco has a Samsung 27" (http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/monitors/LS27EFHKUV/ZA) that I am going to pickup tomorrow that they have for $299. I will let you know what I think of it then.

I am using the Hannspree HF289F 28 inch and I am very pleased with how the game is displayed at max resolution. 3 millisecond refresh rate beautiful colors and I fly the game in HD SLI

Yes I too like the 16X10 much better than the 16X9.  It's a shame that computer monitors have fallen for the "HDTV" Specs trap.  A lot of people think that HDTV resolutions are the latest and greatest, but computer monitors have been capable of HD resolutions LONG BEFORE HDTV's came out.  I don't see any reason to limit computer monitors to a 1080p standard.

I prefer 16:10 too but there aren't many options out there. I did look at the Hanns but the reviews weren't that great.
I can't get used to 16:9 not even my friends TVs. I don't like the stretched view. Even for movies. It's not natural.

I just finished playing with my 2 new monitors, the view sonic and HP.....they are VERY similar. I'll post a report soon.

If the view is stretched then it isn't set up correctly.  If you run a low definition 4:3 signal to a high definition 16:9 television, one of two things will happen depending on how the TV is setup.  1> The picture will be stretched out horizontally to fit the TV or 2> There will be black bars on the left and the right of the picture which will remain at 4:3.  These bars tend to drive people crazy so by default TV manufacturers set it up to stretch it out, and most consumers tend to not know any better.

My in-laws have a HDTV with a low def signal and they were considering upgrading to Hi def service.  I invited them over to see what it is like on my TV and all they did was complain about how everything was squished together.. how everyone looked so skinny and all that.  The truth is that they've become so used to everything being stretched out on their TV that to them, *MY* tv was the distorted one.  Because of this they refuse to pay extra for HD service which is fine.. if they are happy with their picture then that's that.

As for the simply aspect ratio of it all, movie theaters have an even MORE widescreen aspect.. sometimes 22:10 or even wider.  Keeping that in mind, watching a movie on a 4:3 TV in itself I find to be not natural... but you have to remember that the aspect ratio of a display doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the image being 'stretched out' or distorted.
