Request for training....merge, techniques, basics?
« on: January 04, 2011, 10:27:08 AM »
Hi Everyone!

The frustration level is high but not insurmountable after being out of the game for almost 4 years.

I have had a BALL flying against some much better sticks and really need to take a step back and start from the beginning....

Some fun engagements happened last night with lulu and v00d00 and it has me yearning for some one on one training if anyone is willing to do this.

Years ago I took Urchin up on a training session or two back in 2002 and I remember that really helped me considerably.

If anyone would be willing to walk me through the ropes again, I would really appreciate it.

A wise sage once gave me some advice that I have been sticking with:

Leave tracers off and visualize the shots.
Spray and pray does not usually result in anything except getting a con to turn if you ping him far out potentially.
Convergence is set to 300 for 50s to visualize that shot and get a fair amt of punching power in close
I do not take shots at greater than 300 yards as I am a fan of being in close....my eyes are not that good far out and to be honest, when I was flying regularly, I had MUCH greater success (if you could call it that) when I could be closer.
I have been flying against the drones but the left bank/200kts opponents are leaving me in a bit of a rut.

I am open to all suggestions and assistance.  I truly love the game and now that I have tons of time on my hands to improve and have fun with friends in this virtual world, I am ready for the next step if someone is willing to help.

I have thick skin and have always enjoyed this community (have met some really close friends from all the way back to AOL days...not quite Genie days....but since the mid 90's WW2 air combat simulation has been a passion (ask my wife :)...she used to claim she is a "widow" and not in the sense of being deployed a ton...but from the game.... ;)).

I can be up during the daytime from 0730 to 1800 Mountain time (Tues-Fri) with night time late a possibility.  Weekends I am going to reserve for family time and perhaps a Scenario I was bitten by that a while back during some FSOs and Stalin's Fourth.

Thanks to any of you that would be willing to share your experience with someone who is VERY eager to absorb it all.

Cheers,

TG12

PS...I have functional Vox, CH throttle, CH Rudders, and a new CH Fighterstick (thanks Mrs. TG12! :)), and a Track IR.  I know how to use the Film viewer and have been taping all of my flights for review.

Each film is short and to the point. They will help you more than you might think. They were made by two of the best sim pilots in the game. These films will help you find the best merge allowing you to set up for lag pursuit.

When I'm fighting I'm thinking of three things.

How many maneuvers are left before I can get on this guys six

Who in my immediate area is looking to kill me before I can get on this guys six and

Do I have enough time

Hope they still work

Thanks guys!

It sure does feel good to be back!

I have spent the morning setting up the bomber commands to the CH stuff and have just set up the GV commands in the training arena.

The basics are now set so that I can at least up with my squaddies if they want to do a GV run or bombing mission!! :)

I will give the videos a looksie here tonight...thanks for pointing me in that direction.

Now that I have a feel for the joystick/throttle mapping again, I can concentrate on the FUN parts....flying, fighting, and learning to get better again!

Appreciate the help and the responses!!!!  Now to look for someone to fly with!

:)

Guttboy,

Have you looked at any offline missions? I'm sure that would help with the 200kts/left turn issue the drones have.

Drop by the TA and check the roster to see if a trainer is present or pm any of the trainers to setup a training session.

I'm usually in the TA in the afternoons during the week and hope to return to that regularily again in the next week or two.  I'd be glad to help if I can.

My favorite moves but saying and doing it are two different things. After a few attempts you'll get a much clearer picture of how they work

Use this one when your near deck and enemy is following 2.0 to 1.5 out. Climb out a little (you'll lose energy but keep to a minimum) roll over doing kind of a split S called a 1/2 reverse cuban nosing back dn to deck  will recover speed while heading back toward him preparing for the next move which will be a 1/2 cuban

As you pass him, pull the 1/2 cuban trying to position yourself on his six within the next move or two. ( you will be heading in the opposite direction of whats depicted here, ...try to picture it in your minds eye).

He will probably try to pull an immelman to counter your last move and so should you. The difference here is that it will be cost him more energy than you  since you were able to store more E (energy) preforming the first two maneuvers.

Use your stored energy to bleed even more of his by pulling him up further by preforming another immelman which  will force him to change his own immelman's direction following you up due to his loss of speed. You'll be low on energy at this point  yourself but his is gone and lag pursuit should be had.

If you don't have enough E for the second immelman, try using your remaining E for a  hammer head (pic below). Hard Rudder control at the right time is the way to pull this off but be careful, Losing all your energy before you reach the top and you'll be the one hanging and waiting for controls to come back.

This maneuver can be used on many opponents that don't have experience. An experienced player rarely falls for this.

I'd keep them on if I were you. Once you train your eye's to see about where they go in any high or low G situation then maybe you could turn them off.

As i understand, many who turn them off turn them back on after a week or so to re-acclimate themselves.

Yup, leave the tracers on.

Personally I find the tracers much more of a benefit than the sights.  If you want to turn something off, turn the sight off.

This guy has almost all the maneuvers you need to know on film

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED VIEWING for before and after you fly. you'll be an Ace in no time. Below is just the Split S. Go through all his films a coul at a time and enter the arena trying them out yourself.

A8Tool, I'm a bit confused; How would one be able to pull off a half cuban, diving down to same alt as before but in opposite heading, when one's opponent is pulling an immelman? this puts him above you and behind your 3-9 line. It seems like you're suggesting to do two things, so would you just immel in the second move if the opponent starts to immel, and then pull a second immel to try and get above him and on his six?

a8tool,

Those are some really good videos and I appreciate them a bunch!

Morfiend,

I went to the offline practice but could not see any missions.  Are there folks that have made missions for practicing gunnery etc?

Thanks greatly guys!  I have Shaw's book (geeze must have read that thing 5 times over the past 10 years) and will be getting it out of the bookcase again!

You guys rock!  THANK YOU!

Gut,

If you look at the forums you'll find 1 labled as "offline missions"

Some of the players have made missions that you can load and play in offline mode, how good they are depends, but they'll offer you more challenge than the drones.

Morfiend,

I was able to download three of the offline missions today and flew them all.  GREAT work to USRanger and BBosen on the ones that I tried today.  Loads of fun and was much more realistic than the simple drones.  Thanks for pointing me in this direction.

I will be up tomorrow and Wed during the daytime so if you are around I will try to get in touch with you.

Cheers,
