Cooking Fish

Has anyone else heard of doing this, when you have fish that's frozen you thaw it in milk, just put them frozen in a bowl of milk the night before & let it thaw in the fridge, it takes that fishy taste out of the fish, I've done it the last few times I've made Halibut and it's made it taste really good.  Once to see if the milk was making it taste better I didn't thaw it in the milk and it definitely wasn't as good, so I thought I'd share this with other people who like eating fish.

Seriously though I might have to give this ago...Would it work the same on fresh??  overnight in milk...I myself like fish to taste like it but my ack..nah I shouldn't call her that,she has no issue with me playing...missus really doesn't like the taste but loves the benefits of fish.

I've only tried it with frozen fish, but you could give it a try with fresh, I would think it should still work.

My favorite is to thaw it overnight in the fridge in a large freezer bag of either fresh lime juice or fresh orange juice.  Putting some zest in as well even makes it better.

It works well for fresh fish too.  When my brother and I would bring in a nice catch of channel cats, my grandma would salt-rub them then soak 'em in milk.  After that, a good corn meal breading with salt & pepper, then off to the frying pan.   :D

Seafood is usually soaked in milk to tenderize ( calamari). Buttermilk works best but I wouldnt soak it in any milk if you plan on broiling it, only when you coat it with flour or cornmeal does it taste best.
Any fish shouldnt smell like fish if its fresh or good enough to eat, frozen or not.

The overall best way to freeze fish is in a block of ice. It will keep well and wont get freezerburn. Keep in mind it will take forever to defrost :old:

If you are really adventurous and buy whole fish, make sure the eyes arent cloudy and the scales dont come off easy. This is usually a tell tale sign that its been in storage a while

Good advice right here.  When I clean fish they go into a big bowl of water and salt to soak for a bit.  If I'm not gonna eat them fresh they go in ziplocs full of water and into the freezer.  They don't take too long to thaw if you just throw the bags into a sink full of cool water for a while.



Fish is yucky, Steak is man food.  New York Steak, Medium Rare, with a Peppercorn sauce.....OMG YUM  :x

If you use the words yucky and yum in the same post you forfeit all rights to tell the rest of us what "man food" is.  Also putting sauce on steak is for girls and people who can't cook.
