When I would teach people the ability to "PROP HANG" or teach them to fly their airplane in such a manner termed "Hanging on the Prop"
I would give them the following advice, this is just a quick run through of how to go about it, and the end result will give you the possibility of doing some tail slides
here goes:
- take off, gain speed and get up to a decent altitude say 8,000 to 10,000 ft
- get up to speed say 325 to 400 IAS <--- IAS is indicated Air speed the WHITE Needle
- once up to speed and properly trimmed, pull up smoothly but quickly pointing nose straight up
- the plane will begin to slow down and lose speed quickly...leave the throttle Wide Open
- while climbing straight up, use your left or right views to keep your plane's nose perpendicular to the horizon (shore line / skyline )
- use very small stick inputs to the aileron's to cross control the plane's torque roll tendancy
- "sometimes" not always, but sometimes one may need a very small bit of rudder input as well
- watch the speed indicator gauge and watch as it drops to 150, 100, 75, 50, 25, 10, 0 MPH
- once all forward momentum has stopped see how far you can tail slide down before the nose comes around on you
that is about the jest of it, it takes a lot of practice, but trust me it is doable and depending on the plane type you use , one might be able to even tail slide 100 ft to over 1,000 ft vertically down.....
some other tips that may help:
- sometimes dropping 1 or 2 notches of flaps as you near stalling of the climb ( DO NOT DROP 3 , 4 OR All Flaps, the plane will just flip over on its back
- once forward momentum stops , chop throttle to zero
- use manual trim and have the trim set for a level flight speed of 325 IAS to 350 IAS
- turn on the RED/BLUESmoke in the Training arena or offline and watch the smoke change directions as you slide back down
have fun, practicing this will also help one learn how to Hang on the Prop, and help one learn how to drag an opponent to make them stall out
now go practice
