okay car guys... name a 2008 or newer car that's basically a car without a bunch of bells and whistles you'd recommend me leasing for a year or so
Lease?
I think its a waste of money, but whatever floats your boat.  :ahand

Yup,not to mention all the hidden cost like excessive milage charge, wear and tear, etc. the only time a lease makes sense is if it's a company vehicle and can be written off on expenses.

Check the interest rate of the lease, yes they charge interest like it's a loan. Sometimes your much better off buying it outright even if you have to borrow. Right now there's a glut of 07 to 09 cars that were deeply discounted to get off the lots and as a result their used car value is quite low making them a bargain.

There are plenty of these cars out there that can be had for 30% to40% of their original value, and because there's so many often you can name your price and get it.

 Of course YMMV.

This may be true, the reason for the YMMV,I live in Canada and there's little or no advantage in leasing unless it's a company car.

I have some experience with auto dealers,my wife ran the finance dept. at 1 so I speak from first hand knowledge.

I'll say the only thing good about leasing is you can drive a much more expensive car than you could afford to purchase but in the long run your still out the cash and have to return the car.

I've done all the research and there are good reasons why I want to do a short term lease.  Also if I put more than 10k miles on a car in a year it's been a rough year. My 2000 Mustang only has 114 k on it now.

Nah, not really.  There are no "hidden" costs.  Its all there on the contract (in big print) and the dealer will explain it to you.  There are idiots that don;t read or ask, but no hidden fees.

I just returned a VW after a 3 year lease.  An independent inspecting company came out and looked at the car.  Wear and tear "hidden " charge came up to 100$ (with two kids and a dog riding it, and a wife parallel parking it lol) .  As for the millage, I knew exactly what it would cost.

Leasing is cheaper. Just make sure that what ever millage option you choose, you can stay under of.  Looking at a car as investment is silly so both lease or buy is money thrown away.   Leasing also gives you the option to get a new car after a few years without having to worry about the value of the existing car.  You buy it and it is a lot harder to do unless you wasted a lot of cash when you bought it.

Been leasing for 15 years now.  Just read the contract and make sure the millage you choose will be enough for you to stay under.

Well if thats the case Dicho, shop around for your lease! try to get the best intrest rate possible, this can be negotiated in some cases but not all. Check the excessive milage charges, some of these can be 30 cents a mile or more so be informed on this.

Lastly, take plenty of pictures of the car at delivery, any scratches, marks, and pay close attention to the interior.

You could easily be hit with a 4 or 500 dollar bill for a simple "refurbish" to the condition it was in at delivery.

Leasing a "used" car may work out as a short term solution but beware the pitfalls!!

Gracias Morph..

Right now I don't need much car but I'm about to either give Squid the Mustang or sell it and give him the cash to buy whatever he wants.  I'm thinking of saving up a decent down payment or finding the car I really want and refurbishing it.

  Ded,

to be fair your correct, there are no "hidden costs" they are plainly stated in the contracts, but as you say few bother to read this carefully.

I will also admit you make a valid point with regaurds to exchanging cars every few years.the only issue I have is that your always paying for a car, there is never a point were you own it and dont have a monthly bill.

But then what the heck do I know,I still drive my 98 accord, other than gas and oil changes it cost less than $1000 in upkeep per year.....

Stang was paid off in 04 Morph.. I don't know what a car payment is anymore  :lol  Which is my point.  I don't have the down payment to get a car payment for something I really want without getting nauseous.  So I figure do a cheapo lease on something with four wheels, climate control, etc., save the amount over the lease I'd be willing to pay for a car payment and get what I want.  Squids got to have a car or we're going to drive each other nuts.

SmartMoney always has pro's and con's to both sides of financial arguements, I like their analysis best.

FWIW, leasing is not for me, I put on an average of 18,000 miles a year.

Quote
The Advantages
Low Down Payments -- Even though a lot of the advertised lease deals assume a down payment, you can often get the dealer to limit it just by asking. Of course, the more cash you come up with initially, the lower your monthly payments.

Low Monthly Payments -- Since you are only paying off the depreciation on the car -- not its full value -- your monthly payments are much lower than if you opt to finance the purchase of the entire car over the same period of time.

Easy Turnover -- Assuming your car is in good shape, when your two or four years are up, just stroll into the dealer, hand over the keys, and drive out with a brand new car and a new lease arrangement. You don't have to bother with selling the car or haggling with a dealer over trade-in value. That was all taken care of beforehand.

The Disadvantages
No Equity -- Similar to paying rent on an apartment, your lease payments don't go towards owning anything. Unlike traditional financing, you can't look forward to the day when the payments will stop and you can drive your own car free and clear.

Lack of Flexibility -- You pay a big penalty if you want out of the lease before the full term. Bailing out early may cost you as much as six extra months of payments, depending on your leasing company.

You May Pay Extra -- Most leases charge an extra 12 or 15 cents for each mile you drive over a certain limit. Typically the lease agreement grants 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year. (Drivers average 15,000 miles per year.) Also, you'll have to pay up for any damage to the car beyond normal wear and tear when you turn it in. One way to avoid the mileage charge is to buy more miles at a reduced rate (of around 10 cents) up front.

Insurance May Come Up Short -- If you total the car or it gets stolen, your insurance will only reimburse you for the car's market value, which might not cover what you still owe on your lease. You can buy extra "gap coverage" to protect against this, and some lease deals include it automatically.
