The "Gorgeous Airplane" thread
« on: February 19, 2011, 05:05:05 PM »
A post in another thread got me thinking, when someone posted a pic of some Italian aircraft with the comment about gorgeous "art deco" design.... Got me thinking.

I'd venture a guess that most, if not pretty much all of us here have a strong appreciation for aircraft, not just for their role as implements of war but also as marvels of engineering and design, and as art....

I personally look at the "golden age" of aircraft design as being the late '20's to the '40's.....the early aerodynamacists penned some gorgeous aircraft...

in that vein, I invite you all to post up the aircraft that most inspires you visually  ---

For me, I'm drawn to a few, for different reasons....

The de havilland DH88 Comet racer....

The Chilton DW-1 (designed by two young men whom had been trained by and worked for de Havilland)

I have this strange love for the simple, fun look of the Chilton...... I managed to acquire a full set of plans recently.... there are a few that have been built since the original handful of racers in the '30's..... :airplane:

What airplane goodness stirs you guys' souls?

Post 'em up!

My true love.  The Spit XII.

Combo of good looks, power and punch.  Spits from the I to the XII are the prettiest prop planes ever.  The later Griffon birds post XII lost a bit of that look in my opinion.  I suppose you could argure the VIII combined all the refinements into the best looking of the full span Spits, but I'm an XII guy :)

No "Gorgeous" airplane thread would be complete with the Connie or Boeing Clipper.

If we're gonna talk seaplanes, the Dornier Do26 is a gorgeous airplane....

Four (4) Jumo 700hp diesel engines, 2 pushing and 2 pulling! And interestingly the rear pusher engines could be raised 10 degrees for takeoff ---

I'll always have a special place in my heart for these bad boys as I used to work at General Dynamics during the height of their production.
