Sound Effects Not Working
« on: March 06, 2011, 05:34:19 PM »
I just downloaded the new Mission Editor and all seems to work ok, except that no sounds that I add will play.
They are in 8-bit/mono.  Rebuilt the mission I'm working on, but no sounds...  Any ideas?

OK here is an idea. To test your 8-bit monophonic sound files, you could stuff them into one of my missions. All of my missions include optional "Waypoint announcement sounds", and there is an AH2.12.4 version of each mission that includes a detailed explanation as to how to use and/or replace each of those sound files. If you download, for example, my Hanna at Scarpantos mission with at least one of the optional waypoint announcement sound files and verify that it works, (like bwp01.wav) then you can have a test environment that you can trust. At that point, delete my bwp01.wav file, rename one of YOUR files to bwp01.wav, and fly my mission again, listening for YOUR file when the Bishops hit waypoint 1.

Find Hanna at Scarpantos for AH2.12.4 here:

http://techvideoreview.com/FlightSimMovies/AcesHigh/Ah2Missions/HannaAtScarpantos/HannaAtScarpantosP1Full.htm

If my file plays but yours doesn't, you can be pretty sure that your file's wav encoding isn't compatible. If your file plays in my mission, you can be sure that your wav encoding is compatible and there is something wrong with the way your mission invokes it.

You could also try playing my (known good) bwp01.wav file from within your mission logic, using both the Mission Editor and the flight simulator in offline mode. This might reveal some problem in one or both of those environments.

I hope this helps.

Thanks bbosen, I'll give it a try.
I know all the sounds were working before the new editor came out.  I have a couple of audio software programs from Creative that I use.  The sounds will play in the mission editor, when I go to 'test event'.  Just not when I try it offline in the actual mission.

Thanks again.

** FIXED **

Per Skuzzy's advice I changed my in-game audio from EAX, to use Windows Configuration.  Just like that all my offline mission sounds are working again.

Wow. I never would have thought of that, but I did read Skuzzy's advice to you in the other forum and wondered if it would make a difference. I have to keep my configurations fairly generic, as I bounce back and forth between Windoze and Linux and I try to keep everything working in both.

I understand that bbosen.  I have Ubantu <---spelling sucks, on here but I use Vista always.  I had just installed a Creative sound card and thought that since that had an option for EAX and all that other stuff, that I should enable all those things.  To tell ya the truth, the game sounds great using Windows Configuration in the game and leaving EAX disabled on my sound card.  I blame this all on my lack of knowledge with these different sound options & setttings.  Glad we got a place to get some good info.

:salute for the informative feedback.

I am having problems playing back the breifing wav files and the waypoint wav files in the version of the Mission Editor that is bundled
with the current 2.24P5 release.

I am using the wav files from the Peabody Simple04 mission and I've checked that the paths to the files are correct.

The wav files do not play back in the ME when the test button is pressed, nor do they play back in AH with the generated res file.

The wav files all play back ok in the 2.12.4 version of the ME, as well as in AH2124.

I've tried different permutations of the Game Sound options in the current AH, but the results are the same, the wavs do not play back.

I have noticed that the about page in the ME lists 2.24.5 as the client, but the version of ME on the Content Editor download page is 2233.
Is the ME version on the download page different that the version bundled with AH2245?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ilmars

Because the ME is now automagically included with the main Aces High flight sim download, I believe the web site administrators are no longer paying attention to the ME download section, which explains why they are still offering an older version. I'm sure they will notice and correct this oversight soon.

I have only spent a little bit of time experimenting with the current version of the Mission Editor (2.24.5) but I can't get it to work properly with my sophisticated missions, either. Once I made that determination, I became discouraged with it and returned to the 2.12.4 version (as it seems you have done). I'll give the new version a try with my "PeabodySimple" mission as you describe, to see if I can confirm the symptoms you describe.

ilmars:

I just used the current version of the Mission Editor (2.24.5) with my "PeabodySimple" mission as you have done. But my results are different.

In my case, the .wav sound files DO play correctly in the mission editor, and I'm able to generate corresponding .res files by compiling the same mission source code that has always worked correctly with the older version of Aces High (2.12.4 ME and sim).

HOWEVER, the mission won't "fly". The Aces High flight simulator front end plays the first .wav sound file correctly, but then it always crashes immediately upon termination of that first .wav sound file. The simulator locks up completely with the infamous "White Screen of Death", until Windows halts it with the usual "has encountered a problem" dialog.

If I delete all references to the .wav files from the mission source code, then the mission compiles and flies correctly (but of course there are no audio briefings or other mission-specific sounds).

This same symptom has been reported and confirmed by others in the "Aces High bugs" forum.

I'm going back to v2.12.4....

Hi Bob:

Thanks for your input.  It does seem that something is amiss with the current ME.

In my case, the Peabody simple04.res file does fly without crashing but there is no briefing or mission specific audio present.  That is the case regardless if I use your downloaded simple04.res, or if I recompile the mission using the current ME.  Also, none of your other mission res files that I've tried in the current release playback the briefing audio.

I also am getting the crashes that you describe with some other missions (but not necessarily yours).  I'm getting a bit confused regarding the specifics, as I've tried a bunch of permutations, and can't remember if any briefing audio was present prior to the crash in those missions.

I'll provide some more feedback as I poke around with it a bit more, but the missions seem to work quite happily under 2.12.4, so I may stick with that release for a while....

Thanks,
Ilmars
