Firewall Messgae!!!!
« on: March 18, 2011, 11:32:50 PM »
I am getting really tired of getting the Fire Wall Message Since Day one my firewall has been set to Allow Aces High now since the new patch I keep getting the message to hit ALT Tab to allow game to play When I do it freezes me and I can not get into the game. For the amount of times this message pops up and it takes me forever to access the Game I am ready to deduct money from my subscription, it is almost as bad as when I updated my Credit card info to do auto payment but every dam month I have to do it all over again. I am thinking this data base is all messed up

this is the screen i am getting and never had it prior to new update and this all started within last 2 weeks but been able to connect after i hit the alt tab requirements but the game freezes but still able to get in then all is well

You need to REMOVE aces high from your firewall... and then ADD it again.

Even though the file name is the same, the firewall is noticing that the file version is different and is still not letting it through.

Or better yet, remove your firewall software altogether.  All they do is cause problems.  If you're using a hardware router (many cable/dsl modems have routers built in to them as well... check with your ISP) then a software firewall isn't even necessary.. only an extra level of redundancy to make things more of a pain in the  :ahand

Next time spend a little bit of time and do some research before condemning the game itself for your problems.

Before I made this post last night I already resorted those options and still getting that message i know   i am not the only one having this issue a few of my squaddies had the same problem. I already had my fire wall turned off when i remebered to do it and when it is off I still get the message hence to me resorting to here for help next time I will not ask for help and research further on the problem. Guess a guy cant vent here when they are frustrated and this was a last resort.

That's funny, because no where on your original post did you mention that your firewall was disabled, and no where did you mention that you've already tried what I said.  All you did was whine about the message popping up and threatened to "deduct money from my subscription" which I would assume to mean that you're threatening to leave.  The "Tech Support" forum is not a place to vent, rather it is a place to ask for and to receive help.  If you want to vent, there is the O'club forum for that.

People who threaten to quit the game over a trivial problem that is NOT THE FAULT OF HITECH don't get a lot of respect from the Aces High community, and now knowing that you failed to mention things you've already tried to resolve the problem (such as disabling the firewall and removing/readding Aces High to it's 'allow' list) makes me want to help you even less.  Want proof?  Well your post has been up for two days now and look at all those people that jumped in to help!  Wow!  For the record, the ONLY squad member I fly with (out of about 40) that has had a single problem with this was able to correct it by removing and re-adding Aces High to their firewall list.  Doesn't seem like a widespread programming issue to me!

Next time instead of crying and 'venting' how about you try to use your brain and encourage us to help to work with you to find a solution, rather than just crying over it.  As it stands, it just looks like you're just going to have to wait until HTC opens tomorrow to get their help in the matter.  Have you tried calling them?  Have you tried emailing them?  Those may be your best options.

Its not "ha-ha" funny. Its funny like "you still didnt fix it" funny. Probably your Windows Firewall service is not disabled. If you just stopped it then everytime you reboot it restarts. If you dont have a router then you should get one. Simple... right?

This may come across like a personal attack, but you come across like a huge pompous jerk for no reason.  Go give your bad advice to other people -- the only good thing you offered in this thread was to remove and re-add the executable to the software firewall.

Molsman, keep the software firewall enabled and just make sure the game is allowed through.  Remove it and add it like they mentioned.  Relying on a single, cheap, home router for a single and sole layer of security is a bad idea.

I am sorry For coming off like a pompus moron I redid all the things that were suggested on here and I thank all who responded, I would not quit the game over this heck came back after an 8 yr break due to getting married and and starting a family and all. I should of just walked away that night and deleted this Post. I did the tweaks that were suggested and So far everything is good to go. My Problem is I am to stubborn and get frustrated to easy when it comes to computers used to be somewhat good at them but times have changed.

Once again Sorry if I came off the Wrong way in my earlier Post

WRONG! Software firewalls (alone) are a last resort only! Hardware firewalls in combination with software firewalls are the way to go according to most experts. If you could only have one you would want the hardware firewall because software firewalls require that you know a little something about maintaining them and remaining vigilant about where you go on the web what emails you open and who you allow onto your system. Now if you are the trusting type and you open programs that people send you and you visit lots of porn sites then by all means load your system down with monitoring programs. However... you would be much better off to use a hardware firewall... get rid of the nearly useless Windows Firewall... set up a router correctly with a DNS lookup service like OpenDNS... visit www.grc.com and make sure your system is locked down (ShieldsUp!)... and then behave yourself on the internet.

Any software firewall is merely a cork in a hole (last ditch effort) that exists on the users end. That hole (you) will always allow the bandits in and the user (you) is always free to force that bandit to infiltrate his system (you can always download a nasty something that then force Windows to swallow it by "administering" the nasty yourself (dumb)). A software firewall tells you "hey... this nasty thing is on your system and its trying to call home." Too late!

A hardware firewall with something like OpenDNS will warn you BEFORE you get the nasty thing "Hey your administrator said you cant visit this site so if you really want to go there you need to get permission" and the only way through is to defeat your hardware firewall (real dumb).

Of course you can still get a nasty email or a web site you visit that might not be on the banned DNS list could have bad code and give you something you dont really want which is why you also want anti-virus.

The hardware firewall - GOOD
Software firewall - meh - another background process
antivirus - GOOD - just turn it off when playing AH

Either way you go...

Oh and btw... you cannot buy a good software firewall program. I tried. They dont exist.

Especially stay away from Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm actually broke programs on my system and would not allow them to work. ZA is also full of false positives and I am not talking about the free version. I actually found the free version to be less intrusive than the payware version. JUNK! At least they very quickly refunded my money!

A wise internet traveller does not need these things and thats why the number of available software firewalls has steadily been approaching zero. That and they just dont do anything except tell you after its too late.

I have not used ZA in a very long time as you have mentioned nothing but problems from them. I been using Nortons and have rest their settings to allow the game back but i have the windows firewall shut down cause of the cross problems with 2 firewalls knock on wood everything is running fine right now if I run into problems again I will try the other options. Only reason I am using nortons is it is free for me thru my provider.

Thanks

Yes my father uses Norton too. Every time he has a problem I point to it and I say "there is your problem you have a virus on your system."

I don't know, Challenge..... I have used Smart Security 4 from ESET for 4 or so years now and have not had one bit of trouble......

I have tried VIPRE and also OutPost's Pro Software Firewall and although they seemed to be okay, I really like ESET SS4 better than anything else..... ( and yes I use a router that is both Cat5 cable and wireless )

I think it is in bad form to tell the majority of the AH players to not use a Software firewall, while most are using exactly that and probably the majority is using only Windows Fire Wall and a DSL or Cable Modem or even Dial-Up modem.....

not everyone has the IT experience that only very few on these boards have...... telling people to dump their software firewall and then to go by a router for most would just invite more problems that Skuzzy and others will need to try and help fix...

I think it is best to help the individual posted threads as simple as can be to cut down on confusion and just more head aches for the person having the trouble to begin with.....

not go out and spend 20/30/50/90 etc dollars for a router or for a Software firewall, unless the OP is asking for such a thing..

YMMV......

as for that pop-up window talking about allowing AH access through the firewall.........

I have seen that message on 3 different machines in the past 3 or 4 weeks  ( since the last patch ) sometimes infront of the login in screen, sometimes I seen it behind the login screen ( very quick glimpse of it ) until the login screen pops open and covers it up......

it has not caused any problems, but I have never seen it act like that until this most recent patch...

I think if the logging in is lagging or taking long time to load it will be easier to see, but on a clean connect and quick loading of the game you got to pay close attention to barely get a glimpse of it......

has been my experience with that pop-up

hope this helps

Exactly. You could go with nothing though because you are technically aware. Think of it from the other side though. Katanaso just told this guy to go with a software firewall and forget the hardware firewall (indicating by implication that all routers are cheap). I remember all the nasties before the hardware firewall went in and it wasnt pretty and I have a pretty good idea what can and cannot get you in trouble online. I dont remember telling anyone to go out and buy a cheap hardware firewall. I think anyone that jumps into something like that should do some research because not doing that makes you look like a mooncow (look it up - it means dullard). Sure you can buy (or used to be able to buy) a router for $12. Did it include a firewall? Not sure but even if it did it had 90% failures and complaints so who in their right mind would buy it?

Its also my opinion that if you have a hardware firewall setup properly then you also dont need any thing else in operation while you play AH. If you turn around and cruise your porn sites without protection thats on you. In my world a properly setup router and hardware firewall will not even let you see porn... so yes YMMV. I think I made it fairly clear that if a person is careless and cruises around the net clicking unfamiliar links and emails that they need more protection.

Its also very important to learn to setup a router so that packets across those special ports find your machine (details available on this forum). That can really make a difference with your connection.

Nah Challenge, you did not tell anyone to go buy a hardware router with firewall.......... I just grouped that in on my earlier message because it was posted in one of the threads above......sorry if you thought I directed that at you personally

yes, some might read this and go out and buy the cheapest router they can find without doing any research...that is where trouble will start to pop up, I would believe

yes setting rules, allowing certian ports, using the DMZ zones for specific things etc all can be had by a hardware firewalled router....

I just think helping an individual with their specific problem in my view is the best recommendation, with what they have at their disposal/use er whatever, rather than telling someone to not use what they have currently or by going out and spending money they may not have to spend...

If an individual comes and ask: "Hey what is the best or what are some good Routers?" or "What might be some of the better Software Firewall/Anti-Virus/ Internet Security Suites out there for a Home User?" then yes I would recommend something if they are wanting to buy something that is better than what they currently have....

I try to take into account that most are just hobbyist on the Internet, or don't know the inner workings of the Internet &/or their PC or OS.... and merely just turn it on and click on whatever they want to do with their PC.... unless they give some details and show they have a bit more knowledge

sorry for rambling
