B-17 Glitch
« on: April 03, 2011, 11:03:57 AM »
Twice now I have attacked a B-17 while flying the 262 and hit the 17 in the belly with the 30 mil, saw fire light up and when I rolled out of my climb the plane was no longer burning. This happened a few weeks ago, and then most recently as yesterday, I don't have any films on it.

Do you have a low end system? I do and sometimes the flames will not show on my computer.

Also, it could be possible that you mistakes the 30mm explosions for flames, I do it all the time.

No on a low end system............... It must be an explosion I'm seeing, but, I figured once a 30 mil touched you it was all over.... That's what usually happens to me when I'm on the receiving end. Thanks for the input.  :salute

It appears you've figured out what the issue is, but here's a visual.  Obviously this isn't a B-17, but it shows what 30mm explosion looks like (actually a couple of them).

A duce flying through ack to vultch another duce on the runway. That is the representation of everything bad about this game wrapped into one nice little package.

Actually, when you know nothing about the story behind it, I don't quite think you can make those kind of generalizations.

It doesn't need a background story. It stands alone as a piece of art and can be subject to interpretation as such. It is great because it has one clown flying his 200 perk plane through ground fire to inflict the punishment of a 200 perk fine on another clown. It illustrates how everyone flies for the kill regardless of consequence. The same as two guys hoing, a plane augering while strafing a gv, or someone dumping gas on someone while they themselves are on fire.

To be clear, I am not attacking or criticizing you for vultching or being vulched, I am just admiring a fantastic screen shot that represents the philosophy most bring to this game.

<S> on the screen shot. You could probably get Fugitive to do a whole series on this subject.

I don't think tacking a game philosophy to a single action like a HO or a vulch is fair.  I see a difference between a guy in a deadstick airplane making a last ditch turn to fire on a incoming plane and a guy who flies into a fight and points his nose directly at a con firing no matter what.  No everyone flies with the kill for kills sake philosophy.  So I think the background story is important, this isn't a 262 diving just to kill a 262, there's a good story as to what drove this 262 to risk his perked plane to kill this enemy.  This was one of the most adrenaline pumping sorties I have ever flown, and I betcha I won't forget it for a long time.

Sure is adrenal gland stimulating, to strafe a guy on the runway!  :headscratch:  A pulse pounding Runway Vulch!  The only better excitement is the AFK BnZ!

No matter what happened, the answer to one person's idiocy (or your perception of his stupidity), isn't your own.  That truly represents the worst in AH, period.

I'm sure, pretty much, that the 262 dropped on you (you were engaged or damaged), you got your nose around, and he shot anyway.  You died, cried about a ho, and upped a 262 to "teach him a lesson".  You win the special olympics on this one.

The funniest thing is that you post the pic here.

<hijack complete>

Those were probably 30mm hits you saw, original poster.  Just getting a glance on them passing, you may think you started a full fledged fire, but you didn't.

Couldn't be further from the truth.  I'd be more than happy to recount the stories for you guys if you want to hear it, although you seems pretty happy on your high horse making assumptions about players.

EDIT:  Actaully, I think the "worst in AH" is the insulting and degrading attitude shown by players both in game and on this forum.  Those players who see a picture and feel it's appropriate to use phases like "you win the special olympics," "idiocry," and "stupidity" to describe that person.

Moray, your post in a prime definition of an "internet tough guy."  I'm not sure what I did to you to deserve that attitude, but I have a feeling you would never speak to a person like that face to face.  Anonymity gives you power, and in my opinion, you just embarrassed yourself.

I can't remember if I had already been shot down, or had just logged on, but I believe it was the latter.  Anyway, my squaddies (the 91st Bomber Group) were returning from one of their bomber missions.  Now it's a pretty regular occurrence to have much more resistance on the egress rather than the flight in, guys don't notice the huge dar until after it bombs their base.  We're used to cons giving chase as we try and make it home.  The really annoying ones are the cons that follow the group back deep into friendly territory with the intent of hitting the group on landing.  We generally try to stay at altitude and in formation until we're sure there are no more cons chasing.  I can't say why that was different this time, either the 17s were low on fuel or this guy was NOE, but as the group is dispersed to make their individual landings, a 262 come blazing into our formations.  Being split up, low and slow, we were easy pickins for the 262.  All escorts were already landed or in no position to help the bombers.  He picked off a couple bombers until a squaddie landed a couple hits in one or two of his engines.

By this point, I had already upped a 262 north of the field to try and come in and at the very least, scare him off.  I was informed by the squad that after receiving the engine damage, the 262 had left the area.  Figuring he was desperately running back home to land his kills, I chased him home. I was in it for vengeance.  Even though he hadn't shot down me, I wanted redemption for him picking off my squaddies.  He wasn't in any radar circles and he eventually went NOE.  I had to make a choice between 2-3 bases as to which one I thought he might retreat to.  So I flew my 262 at about 6,000ft to the base I best guessed he would return too.  As I approached I saw a low P-51, probably up to intercept me.  He would have been an easy target as he was heavy, low and slow, but he wasn't what I wanted.  I checked the field and see a tiny black pixel moving on the runway, there's my guy. I tip the nose down, I kept my throttle open, I know I can't waste a second getting to him.  I gain icon range as he is screeching to a halt,  I can't imagine how excited I must have sounded on squad vox as I'm rocketing into the field.  I lob the shells, I don't plan on needing this ammo for anyone else so I keep the trigger down.  I see his plane stop moving about a quarter of a second before that burst of 30mm and his plane explodes on the runway.  I'm sure I let out a scream of excitement as I pulled back on the stick.  Of course nothing happened, I had compressed my plane and had no hope of pulling out of this one.  My 262 smashed in the runway just about where I dispatched the other 262.

It was the best use of my perks I can remember, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I simply find it very "manly" to strafe a guy who landed.  Just like when I'm skating in hockey, I find it really "manly" to slew foot a guy to the ice, or to check him when his back is turned <sarcasm>. Not like you beat him in air to air... that's all I'm saying.  If you think it's rewarding to kill folks that are defenseless, your 15 bucks.  I don't, and I view it as detrimental to gameplay.  Now that guy you killed in your 262... he thinks "hey, it was done to me..."  and dives a 190 onto landing aircraft from 15K.  It's a self replicating cycle, one that leads to poor overall arena health, much akin to what the MA's are now.  A bunch of guys flying around saying "hey, it was done to me".  tF15pin just said it more eloquently than I did.  Tardly actions should be met with swift resistance, in any case, lest they become accepted practice.  I don't think any of us play this stupid game to be kamikaze vulched on landing.

"Internet tough guy?"  No, not so much.  I didn't threaten to come to your house and beat you up.... yet.   :neener:

Geeze, that's bizarre. Why did you find the need to get your feathers ruffled and personal over a picture with the sole intention of illustrating the hit effect of a 30mm cannon shell?
