plantronics dsp 500
« on: April 09, 2011, 05:45:50 AM »
Many years ago, when I first started AHII as volvo744, I used a Plantronics DSP-500. This worked great for me, clear sound, and clear voice. I left for a few years and recently came back, and now the mic does not work. The headphones are still outstanding. I was wondering if it was the mic itself, but quite honestly I cannot figure out how to test it on my system outside of AH because there is no way to "key" it, or I don't know which key to use to do that.
The above said, I wanted to know if any changes in this time frame may have affected it adversely, because when I key the mic in game the first time, each time, it locks my screen briefly, a few seconds. After that, fine. And others do hear me keying it, just no sound. I have dug into everything in the system to make sure all parameters are properly set, and it appears it should work, having prioritized "plantronics headset" in everything I can, but again, for me, the odd bit is that initial lock up the first time I key it. It makes me wonder if something changed. I have also tried .resetv

Thanks for any help possible, it is a bit frustrating on two fronts. One, poor communication, and two, accidentally keying the mic with my thumb when is a dogfight. I am always low and slow, so freezing up on screen is very unpleasant. :)

Oh, I should add, one other mod I did to my system in between times on AH was to add a USB 2.0 slot. I already use a powered hub for my X-52.

You can test your mic with a program on your computer. Goto Start/programs/accessories/entertainment/sound recorder. Once the program loads up, click the red "record" button and talk into your mic. Click stop, then play and it will play back what you just recorded. If your mics ok you'll get a play back if not nothing (much like a beep and then nothing in the game)

Thanks. I did this, and got nothing. I assumed I had to key some button besides record to get the mic to key. Must be the mic died in between usages.

Appreciate the help. Does suck though, that was a real nice headset. Now it seems to be discontinued. Now I have to find one similar. Ugh.

No there is nothing you need to press to "key" the mic.  Windows sound recorder does just that.. records what the mic picks up.

I noticed the DSP-500 is a USB device.  Most likely you need to go to the sound properties and set the mic for that headset as the 'default' microphone, otherwise it's thinking you want to use the on-board sound.

Also if the 'key' method in AH cause a brief pause you should look to the processes you have running on your system as well as check your connection witht the free version of pingplotter.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

I believe Tigger is correct.
