Using Film Viewer...not seeing recorded views

Hi Folks,

I have been diligently attempting to review my films but am at a bit of a sticking point.  I use a TrackIR 3 in game and none of the views are incorporated into the film viewing.  I understand this is not supported by the viewer itself from reading on here many times.

What I am having a terrible time comprehending is how to see the other aircraft views.  For example, if I enter another aircraft, in all my films I cannot see the recorded views from the other aircraft.

I downloaded soulyss' "multiplecon.ahf" film and in that film I can see his views as he scans the sky for bandits.  I can also hop in the other aircraft and see their recorded views in cockpit as well.

Has anyone ever encountered this?  I would be grateful to anyone if I can get this worked out. 

I also cannot see the instrument readings from the planes I jump to.  Should I be able to read their gauges?  Right now all I can do is refer to the list at the right for distance/speed/alt.

On a side note, I haven't found a tutorial on the film viewer as of yet and Vista does not support the "help file" located in the viewer program itself.

here's a quick couple of answers for you:

 - As you've found, using trackir will not produce recorded views.

 - If you do have a film with recorded views (hat, keys, etc) like Soulyss' and you jump into another plane, you are still seeing the original views from the filming plane.

 - As far as what you see in an alternate plane in filmviewer, I think you can see gear, flaps, guns --- can't remember if you can see the other control surfaces

You can try using the padlock view if the film doesn't have recorded views. It kind of feels like trackir. Lately I've been having fun using a fixed view, turn on trails and slow the film down and zoom,tilt,pan all over the place.

Ok so the way I understand what you are saying is that there is no way to see how an enemy is looking outside of his plane in the film viewer?

For example, in the soulyss film multicon.ahf, when I jump to another acft the views I am seeing from within that cockpit are what soulyss is doing at the time?

Will take a look at the flaps gear and see if they are showing anything.  I was concentrating on the altimeter/airspeed indicators and they show nothing which I believe to be the way the viewer is.

I have used the padlock views on the enemies with success from my aircraft but have no success seeing things from other aircraft as of yet.

My interest is to see how other pilots use their views when I am approaching them and also crosschecking my views from in cockpit in an attempt to dissect the engagements to improve.  I have been using the external views with trails and using the zoom/speed/angle sliders to see just what went wrong (or right) in an engagement.

IIRC no control inputs visible, neither joystick/pedals nor control surfaces, and only recorder's instruments work.

You mean padlocking yourself?  You can't do that but you can padlock any other plane from another cockpit.

Unfortunately all you have to go by are views from the player that recorded the film.

I think you are right Moot on the controls.  Been messing with the viewer and I think it is just a static cockpit when in other cockpits.

On the padlock, I have been able to be within my aircraft and padlock to another plane (it shows up as the box) but still trying to mess with that a bit.  Not having used padlock in the past this is kind of new territory for me but I should have it broken down tonight! :)

When you talk about "views from the player that recorded the film"....does that mean that the person had to film the sortie, then go back into AH film viewer and record the views somehow?

OR

Does it automatically take the hat switch views from what the person was looking at during the actual sortie?

In Soulyss' film "multicon.ahf"  when using the "recorded view" box checked, I can see where he is looking during the sortie....I was under the impression that the .ahf showed what he was actually looking at throughout the flight.

Padlock meaning in the game, not replaying ahf films?

#2  Just trying to say that only a player's own views are recorded in films, so all you have to go on is what each player himself records.. IE you won't learn about someone's view/SA habits unless they record themselves.

Yes all you get is Soulyss' recorded views.  If you go to another plane, or even go to e.g. F5+F8 mode, his hatswitch inputs will be applied identically there too.

Thanks Moot!

I checked on the film again and you are indeed correct.

So, if I wanted to learn how a person's scan pattern works when in a multicon environment, all they would have to do is record the film and then I would have to get a copy of it....correct?  (note: they cannot be using TIR as we know that doesn't work when replaying)

I have asked a couple of folks to make some films of them flying so that I can gain a better understanding on 1) the different methods of ACM and 2) the way that they aim.

I have been working on my aim and it is getting better so that is a plus!

Excellent, I wondered that but never thought to ask.

Now, this may be an obvious one along the same theme, but here goes.

If I look at a recorded film (my own) from the DA, is there a way I know if other plane’s (particularly the one I am fighting) pilot is using F3 mode during the fight?

I don’t use it being that it doesn’t equate to fighting in the MA, but when analysing a previous encounter it’s worthwhile being able to gauge you opponent.

Looks like Moot fielded most of the questions already but to speak to methods of maintaining SA (Situational Awareness) and how I scan the skies.  I always try to pay attention to which direction the friendlies are coming from and which direction the bad guys are going to be coming from.  Most players will fly a straight line to and from the fight.  So I keep an eye on the compass and tend to pay a little more attention to the direction the enemy field is located at as well as the direction the nearest friendly field is located for help.  While I attempt to take nothing for granted armed with this little bit of info I can give these two directions a little more attention. When I can help it I try to make attacks either perpendicular to the cons axis of advance or attack towards friendly lines, attacking towards the cons line of advance is asking to get ganged unless you can end the engagement quickly.
