Sweet, next time I have an issue that I just can't put my finger on, I'm gonna call Best Buy and ask them to walk me through it.

I wasn't aware that the Geeks would do that for us.  Thanks for the heads up.

You probably have a small independent local retailer there you can support with your needs. Why should you use best buy?

Besides, your hardware and software related questions are most certainly answered also here. How many reasonable questions were left unanswered after TD left? If you were a hardware retailer, tell me, would you jump on any thread where user is listing components for his dream box? Fine. Now ask yourself why was TD so helpful and why you shouldn't get the same kind of 'MAAS marketing as a service' from any local retailer at any given time.

Every retailer I've talked to has always been extremely friendly and helpful with any question relating to stuff I'm planning to buy - and they will even recommend you the components they see fit for your use. Sound familiar?

The way several members of this community treated him was shameful.

His departure from this community is a loss for many in my opinion.

So asking him to correct false statements and/or provide independent reviews/links as proof was too much to ask and shameful?

You know what, the way you accepted anything he says for a fact is what's shameful. You need to have source criticism especially when you're talking with a salesman. You ask for time he'll try to sell you a wrist w a tch. I'd do the same.

Edit: argh lingofilter strikes again

If TD was really such a nice guy he'd have given his wealth of knowledge with no expectation of renumeration but as it was, I saw him repeatedly trying to make computer building into some mysterious black hole that only masochists would jump into.  The truth is building a good computer is one of the easiest things you can do in your life.

As with anything else, it's easy to do once you've done it a couple of times. I did it once and asked a lot of questions in this forum, and received a lot of answers.

I never had the impression that TD was shilling here. As a player and participant here he was asked to build a number of gaming systems. I only recall one customer who had issues with the end result. It's all water over the dam at this point. It's just a shame that someone trying to lend a helping hand catches grief and has his intentions called into question in the process.

Ok so if I help a few players build boxes and make a few hundred bucks on the side, nobody is ever again allowed to question anything I say no matter how factually wrong it would be?

Intersting  :huh

You missed my point completely.  TD provided technical assistance to anyone on these boards for the cost of a phone call.

it wasnt the querying that was the problem, it was the manner in which you did it - relentless nitpicking with no attempt whatsoever at trying to find common ground. from the beginning it read like you had some kind of agenda and were going to just keep at it until you got the desired result. which you did. well done.
