Joystick problem, trying to figure it out
« on: April 19, 2011, 06:02:41 PM »
So I had issues with my X52 about a year ago and basicly stopped playing flight sims cause of it.

As I start to fly its fine, but when i pull up on the stick sometimes it works and other times nothing will happen, or sometimes it will very very slowly pull up, then a few seconds later the plane jerks up and it works fine for a few seconds. This happens repeatedly during flight.  I have made sure all wires are still connected, nothing is split, i cleaned up the oil/grease that was on the magnets and around it, its still doing it. What could be causing this?  Everything works fine except the Y when i pull up on it.  I also notice the Y axis under controls is moving, the number I mean. And ive calibrated it multiple times.

So I went and re downloaded drivers and noticed something, in the set up program:

The X and Y axis square in top left isnt in the center, but the mouse one in the bottom right is?
Also When i move the stick left to right that little cross goes all the way to right and all the way to left. But when I move it up and down it only goes like 3 cm up and down?

Then when I went to deadzone I noticed that the Y axis is far to the right and all the others are in the center?

And again, when I push the stick to the right or left is goes all the way to the right or left, but not when I move it up or down.

Appreciate any help (In other words "PLEASE HELP ME", I have been craving to play some flight sims for like a year now...)

Dead potentiometers is most likely the culprit.  If you're brave enough, you can crack open the stick and make sure the wires are connected firmly to the contact points on the potentiometer and if they are, use some contact cleaner to clean the contacts points.  If you're still having issues then the problem is from the potentiometers dying.

Ok I opened it up and am looking at the potentiometer, I dont see anything wrong, seems like all wires are plugged in.

Pots are dead then.  Call Saitek and see if you can get some replacement pots sent out to you.

 Ack,

while I bow to your knowledge of JS's I believe the only pot in the saitek stick is for the twist rudder and the x/y axii use halon devices.

Red,check the hardware forum for the saitek magnet modification, this might help you out,I think it's simply that the magnets arent in the proper position to center the stick and arent making they're full movement.  Maybe when you cleaned it something didnt go back exactly in place.

    hope this helps.

I would also remove all Saitek software and try the stick in the game as well.

The X52 does not use pots on the stick's X/Y axes.  It is hall effect.

There is definitely something amiss here though.  It looks like it is out of calibration.  Maybe doing the magnet mod will help, but I'm wondering if the sensor itself may be bad.. not reading the magnet properly.

Here's a pretty decent Youtube video explaining the process.. it's really not that difficult.

I did it to mine out of boredom one day, but haven't played AH with it yet.  Been using my G940 instead.

It might be the calibration bug in the Saitek software as well.  Once you get that, the only way to fix it is to edit the Windows registry.

I have used this for awhile it has cleared things up for me a few times . It removes Windows calibration data from registry . I think Skuzzy is the one who recommended it . It has worked for every brand of stick I have tried .

I tried this and same thing, the calibration shows the joystick at the bottom like before.

Red,

Just throwing this out there but have you tried the JS ingame? if not try it,goto options, controls, map controls, check advanced on the selected Y axis and see if the game shows the same results. Maybe ingame the raw window will show the axis centered and having complete movement.

I'm thinking a possible glitch in the saitek calibration GUI.

If you see the raw window showing the stick out of center then it's way over my head..... :o

The problems happen in every flight sim, including FSX. Ive tried everything in the AH calibration and nothing will work.

Also in game as I stated above, when i go into configure controls the Y axis number is tweaking out. Everything else is fine. I have calibrated like 20 times and it was never fixed.
