all I did was pick the song I wanted, in may case the Army Air Corp song, renamed it title0.mp3 and copied it to the sounds folder.

and it worked.

Name of the mp3 file is title "zero" .mp3 and not title "letter O".mp3, right?   Really reaching for stuff here. 

Could there be different subformats of mp3 that won't play?  Different bitrates or whatever?

Yes sir its a zero not the letter O Ive tried it as a mp3 format and as a Wav format, Ive converted sound wavs for my plane sounds with no problems and they work, this just has me puzzled, I'll try one more thing but is there any size restrictions on the sound file?
