multi core rendering
« on: May 19, 2011, 10:06:15 PM »
Just wondering how many cores Aces High will utilize. I ask because I have a 2.5ghz quad core and i have found some games will only use 2 cores. I recently had to replace my gpu. I "technically" down graded from a radeon 4870 to a radeon 6770 (overclocked) which is not quite as fast. I use to max the game out with high res pack and never drop below 40fps with the 4870. Now i have had to turn down the settings considerably with the 6770 to keep it above 25fps when it gets busy. I can still play with no problem just thought I would get better performance outta this card and processor.

cpu:2.5ghz quad core

ram:4 gig ddr2

gpu:radeon HD 6770

psu:certified 500w

OS:vista 64-bit
UGH.....

Did you delete the drivers and then reinstall? If you just overwrote them some files can get corrupt and funny things happen. There will be files left behind that need to be removed out of the registry also. I would make sure that you know what your doing before going into the registry though. There are some programs that can do this for you but can't think of the names right know.

You should be able to run the game maxed with that card.

Also make sure that your screen resolution matches the games settings. I know there's a writeup someone did for video cards settings in these forums do a search for it.

As I recall Aces High only uses 2 Cores.  Also, depending on what "2.5GHz Quad Core" that is, it may not be all that good.  Vista is going to be an issue "almost" always.

A basic check-list:
>When you switched cards did you properly re-install drivers to match?
>How many Processes are running?
>Does the CPU Usage on Idle spike above 2%?
>Is everything getting adequate power?

Best bet for help would be a proper DxDiag.  Start>Run (Vista/7 have it built into the start menu)>Type DxDiag>Save All Information> Copy/paste everything above the Sound Devices (included) here.
A 6770 should run the game better than you say you're getting.

is most critical to make sure you do a complete uninstall of the ati drivers and maybe even the ATI manager program...... there is a program for ATI stuff that will completely remove/clean out all ATI related stuff/drivers etc....

then restart the pc and install the new drivers for your new video card, and preferably from the specific card manufacturer/Brand's website........ ie: ASUS, XFX, HIS, Visiontek, Saphire, etc...... if you're using the AMD/ATI video drivers from the AMD/ATI website...these might could cause you an issue depending or possible lower performance depending......

as 1701E posted, a DXDIAG report of your current system would be very helpful in trouble shooting / finding any possible hiccups in your setup....

hope this is of some help............ good luck

Personally I'd look at the video card settings, what do you have the AA and AF set to,try application control.

That 500 watt PSU is pretty small these days, whats the minimum rated power supply for your new VC? Are you sure it's getting enough juice?

But I digress....a DxDIAG posted might help better than making guesses.

straight from amd's specs on the 6770

Quote
450 Watt or greater power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (600 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for AMD CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode).

wonder how you find out how much power you have running off a pci-e power connector...i've never tested one.  :headscratch:

Thanks for all your replies. Yes, i properly removed old drivers before installing new ones. I did however use amd/ati drivers and after this post will begin installing new xfx drivers. Will post results. As for psu, 500w should be enough according to the specs on amd's website as posted by gyrene81. As for the quad core, it is a amd phenom 9850 which is not the best quad core and is outclassed by its intel equivalent. This being said I also haven't seen anything saying it should be giving me a problem, and in my experience is hasn't in other games like bfbc2 and crisis 2. Then again maybe you will find something... You also asked about its idling usage and it is definitely under 2%. I use selective start up and keep a good handle on what processes are running. I will now post my dxdiag, but if you don't find anything is it possible this card is a dud, or maybe its just not as good as you think? I would think with a coreclock of 850 and memory clock of 1200 it would use more than one 75w connection, but then again I really have no clue about how that works...

Im running a 5770 which is pretty much identical to the 6770, and at max settings in AH i run 60fps all day long with frame sync enabled. Thats with 2048 textures running at 1680x1050. Even at 1080p, im sure the card would be able to handle it. I'm running an older processor....AMD 955 Phenom II quad core. There has got to be something screwy going on if you can barely pull 25fps. Make sure you dont have your anti aliasing quality maxed out in the ATI settings. That can kill frame rates very fast. I run everything in the ATI menu on default settings. Its a good blend of speed and image quality.

I'm using 1024 textures, 1 notch of AA, native res of 1680x1050, and default in game graphics setting except i turn all shadow settings off...... and it is going between 40fps and 60fps. When i open my clip board it drops to 30fps.... Also, i installed drivers from xfx website and it didn't seem to change anything...

Thats strange ...should be a lot faster. I forgot to mention I run with shadows off as well, but everything else is checked and the distance and detail sliders are maxed out.

Just to be sure, you ran the DxDiag the way it would be right before you open Aces High, right?
If so, "Page File: 1749MB used, 6654MB available" is not a good sign.  If you had things open, close them and try that portion again.  I know you say you control what is open, but all it takes is 1 process that kills it all.

The CPU and GPU are fine if they're working optimally so it's gotta be something running that is hurting the FR.  It's also possible the PSU is an iffy-brand and isn't truly giving 500W with the required 12V power.  What Type of PSU is it (Brand, Model)?

I am begining to think it may be my power supply failing. This card only requires 1 6 pin power connection so i changed it to my other 6 pin connection to see it it made a difference. I saw a small change maybe 5 fps increase but still not what it should be. Next step is gnna be checking the psu i guess. The psu is only 3 years old and i heard antec earthwatts was a good brand but i guess its possible. Just spent 400 fixing this computer. don't want to spend anymore if i don't have to, ugh......  Oh its a antec earthwatts EA-500D atx 12v v2.2

badace, you should check your paging file size after a fresh boot...after you shut down everything you would before you run ah, and before you open your web browser...then once you have the system sitting in a state of "ready to play ah"...open task manager and look at the performance graphs for 5 minutes with nothing going on, don't even move the mouse...the cpu should sit at zero and your memory usage should not increase.

i'm running win7 64bit on an intel dual core 2.4ghz with 4gb ddr2 800mhz and an xfx radeon 4870 1gb card...from a fresh boot, anti-virus turned off "ready to play ah" state, my paging file size sits at ~730mb or so...it doesn't get over 1gb opening teamspeak 3 and ah...and my cpu state stays at zero utilization until i start opening programs.

since the 2.24 update, my frame rates have gone weird like some others...from steady 59fps with a few people around to 30fps and crash in a crowd...never did that before, but can't prove what exactly is causing it.

OK, i can't seem to get the page file any lower.... Also doing what you said I am seeing the cpu usage was bouncing from 2 to up to 7 percent..... usually between 2 and 4 percent though..... I cant find anything in my process list that shouldnt be there, I have checked each of the processes online and I just don't see anything that shouldnt be there...
