 in one of the other car threads, the topic had at one point moved on to fuel pumps, and why they're placed in the fuel tank...and i think there was mention of the different mounting methods, and how they keep the pump cool.
 this past week, i did a fuel pump in a 97 chevy surburban, and i did one in a 2000 infinity qx4

first the surburban. this is the pump.


actually, this is the pump assembly. the little black part to the right of the picture, is the pump itself. the black, is a wrapping. the pump is inside. if removed from the hangar assembly, it will fit in your fist.
 if you notice the tube right alongside of the pump itself....this is the return. this pump, when installed in the tank, sets in this......

 this is a look inside the fuel tank from where the pump hangar mounts. notice the well? or walls? this is where the pump resides. it serves a couple of purposes.
 first off, it keeps the pump at least partially submerged in fuel. the return tube on the pump assembly keeps this well full.
 secondly, it helps keep the pump able to pull fuel in hard maneuvers(like anyone's gonna play mario andretti in a surburban!)
 in this setup, i normally would have only replaced the pump itself, but if you notice the 2 rusted tubes in the top left of the picture....they used to be attached. it's pretty common on gm products for these to rust in place, causing the need to replace the entire unit.
 this type of setup was used from the mid 80's up till about 99 or so.

 this is the pump from the infinity.


 infinity chose to do it a little differently. the new pump is sitting just above the old one in this picture. NOTE: this is about the same size as the pump in the suburban.
 in the infinity, the pump is encased in the plastic housing you see. it mounts here.

 note to the left of the picture the wall with the cutout? that is where the pump mounts in its enclosure.  on this design, the pump is clipped into that well. this one functions much like the chevy's setup. the tube mounted on the side of the enclosure, is the return. it keeps the well in the 2nd picture filled, again to keep the pump submerged.
 now, the mounting on this one is slightly better, as the pump is mounted in a near horizontal position, keeping more of the pump within the fuel as the level goes down.
 the well to the right of the picture is for the float to the level sensor. the infinity accesses the pump through an access cover under the rear seat. in the chevy, the tank had to come down.
 i had hoped to have one with the entire module assembly, but i haven't yet. i'll update this when i do get one though.

If you've watched the new version of Battlestar Galactica, you will hear "the hybrid" reading instructions on how to replace the fuel pump as shown in the infiniti picture.

I use either the 300zx twin turbo pump or the one out of a Q45 on my nissan turbo project and customer cars.....unless we're going over 400hp...whereupon, I use two rather than the walbro 255 which seems to have reliability issues.

Found that battlestar galactica quote.

It is from the episode "the hub"

Here is the sentence the "hybrid" uttered during that episode.

HYBRID:  "To remove the pump with the attached hose and wiring, simultaneously release the three tangs while pulling the pump out of the retainer along with the line and wiring."

Now that I think about it, this is the proceedure for the toyota lexus pumps but it's possible nissan changed to this in the 2000s because bosch seems to have been the original inventor of the scheme.

I think I replaced a few hundred sentra pumps in 1994 for some sort of bosch recall and again in the mid-2000s for lexus.

i've not seen all the bsg episodes, and don't recall that one, but it wouldn't surprise me.

 the nissan/infinity pump is slightly agitating, as it's easily accessible through the floor of the vehicle, but then you have to fit your hand down through the opening to release that pump.

 when i do these, i do stock replacements, and haven't had any problems. both of the vehicles mentioned have well over 100k miles on them.
