Must have been AFTER the 6 of us defending the field against some 20-30+ attackers were wiped out within minutes. The way we saw it A85 looked intact after we killed most (all?) of the Bostons then were killed ourselves.

Looking at the logs you had so many fighters with no defenders at all, that they actually racked up a large tally of buildings themselves.

I don't mean to detract from giving your escorts credit, but we stood a snowball's chance in hell, being mandated to take more 110Gs than we had actual pilots on hand. It was a turkey shoot.

EDIT: Sorry for the negative waves. It was over 10 seconds after I saw my first enemy. Very bitter about the defending force vs attacking force ratios.

that was my fault krusty...i thought you guys would field more pilots for the frame...and with kn there to augment, figured it would be a decent fight.

I'm not blaming you. No use in that. I know these things happen. It's still a tad bitter when it happens though.

In FSO either you are the bug or the windscreen.  412th was the bug in frame 1.  We had 4 p-39s, 2 LA-5s, and one P-40.  We got jumped by 10-15 109g-6s.  Myself and Drano were on the deck in our la's fighting with a swarm of 109s.  Was a fairly long fight in light of whichever way I looked there were at least 2 109s in view.  Didn't have a scratch for the longest time, and then BOOM!! 20mm to the skull.

Defanatley bad timing for pairing 2 squads with poor frame attendence.
But you got max effort from those of us who did show up, however brief the combat was.

That was the 332nd Flying Mongrels Softail. We were pretty much wiped out by another squad before we could reach A78. Sorry about that.

:salute macdp51 and Duxford and 77th Gamblers

We felt bad that we didn't get everyone out.  Sorry about that.  The P39 can only do so much!   :lol

The 110s were co alt and above us and dove in on the Bostons. We actually saw a rather large swarm over the V base to the NE and thought that was the CAP to A85 until you guys called out contact so we turned back in and tried to make up ground and clear your 6.  When I dove and chased the first 110, I was surprised it didn't auger or compress.  My bird surely was creaking going down hill but it gave me enough energy and thrust to catch the second 110 in one swoop (rare for me).

We thought for sure there would be another squad waiting on us when we came back for the 2nd run but nothing.

I have to agree with Krusty on this one.

The 110s was a great idea but would have been complimented well with a mid sized squad in 109s.  That is what we were expecting  to see and kept looking over our shoulders for them from engagement with the 110s all the way home.

Considering we were striking an airbase, I thought our force was rather small but the situation changed when we got on target.  In the end, it simply worked out for us.

Again, <<S>> to the 77th and Duxford for putting their faith in uis.  We still feel bad that we didn't get more Bostons out of there and home.

 :salute

I was that 110. I wasn't going so fast, you were!

I made a HO pass, and nose slightly low was maintaining speed for a high-speed low-bleed 180. I had just come around out of the turn, nosed down and BAM, I'm dead with a squad of P-39s point blank behind me that weren't there when I entered the turn 3 seconds prior.

So I wasn't nose down chasing and creaking, only doing a respectable dive. Might explain the mystery there :)  :aok
