Custom Arena for Practice
« on: August 05, 2011, 08:37:25 AM »
With the new player-spawned arenas, I thought I'd try this and see if anyone uses it. On Thursdays and Fridays, time and duties permitting, I'll spawn a custom arena with the current FSO map and settings as posted in the FSO section of the AHEvents site. If HTC doesn't melt down (as has happened the last couple of days), I'll have the arena up by 19:00 Central time and will keep it up until nobody is around to keep it alive - custom arenas automatically shut down 5 minutes after the last person leaves.

This week:
I'll set this up according to the posted specs for
the August FSO "Decision at Dunkirk". You probably
don't want to formulate or practice your plans here,
but you can get a feel for the planes and settings.
The only activate fields are around the channel, since
I don't know what the real fields will be.

- Icon Range – Friendly 3k, Enemy 3k.
- Radar on full, to help find people for practice
- Fighter and Bomber Warning Range - 79200 (15 miles)
- Tower Range – 79,200 (for display to match warnings)
- External view for bombers (F3) - On
- Friendly Collisions - Off
- Enemy Collisions - On
- Kill Shooter - Off
- Fuel - 1.0
- Ack - 0.4
- Formations - Enabled
- Bombsite calibration - Main Arena Standard
- Time 11:00AM
- Visibility - 17 miles
- Winds - None

Allies (Bishop)
Active Fields: A10, A11, A12, A13, A14, A15, A16
B-25 - Glass nose only
Hurri Mk1
P-40B
Spit Mk1

Axis (Knight)
Active Fields: A36, A44, A45, A46, A47, A48, A49, A60
109E
110C - No bombs
Ju 87
Ju 88

While I'm in there, I'll be on vox 250.

I had about 9 people in there at the peak tonight. They seemed to be having fun and learning all sorts of stuff about Mk1 engines.  :airplane:
I'll have a go at it again next week.

WTG DOT!!!!

That idea of yours was the best and it really worked out great for the 325th VFG who came in for practice.  4 of our pilots operated in Dot's arena for 2-3 hours and it really paid off big time when it came time to fight Frame 01.  Also i would say we all had a really fun time in there

Being open to everyone of course makes this a great training tool.  Key points:

Most everyone was on the same freq (250) so being able to talk to your opponent to set up a merge alt or fighting ratio was great

Being able to fight against other squad members from the other FSO squads multiple times was a great tool as well

Having the exact arena setting as the FSO allowed everyone to see exactly the effects and calculations for fuel load vs weight

Being able to switch back and forth between sides also allowed you to see what the other guys AC could do in those arena settings and against those personnel.  And of course to continually balance the fights and sides.

I must admit at first I was a bit concerned about security given you have guys from both sides in the same arena.  But it wasn't an issue because this allowed for both sides to switch back and forth and fly both plane sets

All a very effective training tool for any squad to use.  <S> Dot for one of the best training tools thought up to date.

11pm est

That's what time FSO starts :)
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

They automatically shut down 5 minutes after the last person leaves.

I guess timing is everything.  ;)

Also, with the heat and issues in Texas, HTC has been having problems keeping the BBS and the custom arena servers running smoothly. I got lost UDP and then disco'd from the arena on Thu, and when I came back it was closed - because I believe they lost the server to power issues.

that could of been the issue also I knew they shut down after 5 minutes when the last person shuts the lights out.

Reminder that I'll have this running again this week, starting tomorrow (8/11) by 1900 Central Time if not a little earlier.

You probably won't want to practice your mission profiles, but it's a great way to get used to the rides and matchups.

The CV groups will be a little SW of the channel in case anyone wants to practice against them.
