An accessory for the P51 I never knew existed.
« on: August 09, 2011, 07:53:02 PM »
Just when you thought you knew all of the P51 options… This from the Library Of Congress photo collection.

Wooden wheels are attached to a P-51 ("Mustang") fighter plane so it may be moved around the ramp at the Inglewood, California plant of North American Aviation, Incorporated. When it is ready for flight tests, regular landing wheels with rubber tires will be substituted.

Cheers! Goaly

Does anyone  know the purpose?  wouldn't it have been easier to fit regular wheels? :headscratch:

The wooden wheels were used to roll the planes around the factory and ramp... Once completed, normal wheels and tires were installed for the test hop....

The wood wheels had much lower rolling resistance than pneumatic tires, making it easy for two or three men to push the P-51s around.

Failed attempt for a second "wooden wonder"? This is not where the wood parts are supposed to go.
Mosquito VI - twice the spitfire, four times the ENY.

Practical application is the word.
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

20mm

The plane is an Alison-engined P-51-A that was intended for the RAF.
